Well, we've sure had a doozy of a week here on the newly reopened !android@lemmy.world.

This post is designed to have everyone on the same page for the operation of the community, as well as to address any feedbacks or concerns which you may have. Our goal is to make sure everybody's voice is heard.

Everything is up for discussion, feel free to give your thoughts on the current state of the community here.

Instead of being on a set schedule, this post will be updated whenever our moderation team feels like there's enough of a need to start a new one. Hence, irregularly updated.

So. let's get started:

  1. We are looking for new mods.

As this is a technical community, the amount of rule breaking comments and posts we have to remove right now has been pretty low. So, the primary responsibility of mods is currently to engage with the rest of the community and actively host discussion threads.

I'd say we would want at least two more moderator for now. Mods should be knowledgeable and helpful and should serve as an example to the rest of the community.

  1. Instance and community partners.

With the admin's permission, we have decided that partnership with different communities will be needed for to help each other.

Please contact our moderators to see if we can have your communities linked on our side bar, but no further promotion will be allowed from any of us, and moderators have the discretion to remove advertisement under Rule 3.

  1. Mod philosophies: Overall

I like to keep the atmosphere here casual yet passionately helpful, so, rules will be interpreted with a consideration for people first and foremost, as it's the spirit of the rules that matter more than the letter. (But I'm usually a big softy on the rules.)

However, we also have a zero-tolerance policy for hate. Rule 5 will be liberally applied from our moderator team as seen fit to prevent toxic internet arguments. Please be your best self here and don't make any of our lives more difficult.

  1. Mod philosophies: No AMAs

The main topic we want to talk about here is Android, instead of having people doing self-promotions. If you had an interesting experience or topic about Android you would like to share, please describe it in a regular post instead.

AMAs are strongly discouraged, and it'll be unlikely that our mod team would want to host any here for the time being.

  1. Mod philosophies: No megathreads.

They just stifle discussion more than anything else. The Lemmy default "Active" algorithm is better than reddit's default, so I don't see a need for them. So, no megathreads for now.

  1. Low quality comments

OK, for example, please don't do the subreddit as hashtag thing here. Leave that behind at reddit. Please.

  1. Optional Submission Statements

We're going to encourage posters to leave an optional submission statement on their own thoughts on the article before submission (not just a summary or a copypaste of the article), in case the headline doesn't explain enough.

Please don't submit anything that you haven't read yet. It's lazy, and not behavior we would want to encourage here.

  1. Any other questions or concerns you want to cover for the current rule set.

I'm the backend guy at lemdro.id, I started the instance. I don't moderate the !android@lemdro.id community (or any of them... I purely do infrastructure), but I am quite aware of the drama around recent events involving the two android communities.

The intent behind banning all lemdro.id users from applying to be mods feels quite... retaliatory? I'm not sure there is anyone on lemdro.id who would apply, but depriving them the opportunity simply because they are associated with an instance that hosts a community which had another community merge into it?

It is your community, you can of course do what you want. I just wish we could drop the drama, act like adults, and move on. Tired of the vitriol.

Have to agree. I'd rather not exclude a whole instance for the actions of a few but that's my personal opinion and it's up to the moderators.

A lot of this so-called drama wouldn't have happened if Lemmy had the right tools to migrate communities and users between instances. It's just growing pains in the end.

I just want to thank the new mod team for stepping up. These sound good, will be excited to see where the community goes from here.

I appreciate bi-weekly brand discussion, I've learned some new things already from it.

While I mostly agree with the no AMA/no megathread, I would hope maybe there would be some wiggle room for those times when someone gets hands on with a prerelease device at an event for example.

Sometimes this can help to get our questions to the dev team before final release or generally gives us an idea of whether a device is worth considering, whether for a new device or an upgrade over a previous model, since reviews often don't come till after pre-orders have already been placed.

I think we are doing weekly for now, since they slow down a lot in the last couple of days even for discussions for one of the largest Android brands in the world.

I would hope maybe there would be some wiggle room for those times when someone gets hands on with a prerelease device at an event for example.

They should just submit it as a regular post here, like "Here's what the pre-release device is like.".

The goal is to have everyone participate in the discussion and talk to each other instead of focusing on just one or two people.

Anyways, I didn't ban them altogether, just "strongly discouraged" for now, so wiggle room is there.

Oh, forgot to mention, for the icon/banner contest, it's very much a risk/reward thing, since you'll get a better image if you spend more time working on it, but the earlier you post, the more people will see them.

We'll see how it goes. I'm not going to participate since I'm hosting it this time.

Thanks for stepping up. The guidelines make sense to me.

[-] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Please consider it a constant work in progress, we will try to address any issue as they come up.

Nice work! I could help moderating ;)

[-] MargotRobbie@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Well, I was going to ask for your help anyways, so that sure saved me some time.

Edit: fixed :)

Hi! Incredibly small note - it looks like the community name has a trailing space (it seems like it's "Android ", with a space after the d), so it looks a bit goofy on non-lemmy.world instances with a space before the @:

Picture of the community banner showing the name is "Android " (with a trailing space)

Fixed! Thanks for telling us!

We're all learning here, hopefully this is the first of many to come.

This is very unfortunate.
