Summary

Following Trump’s 2024 election victory, the fervor of anti-Trump media and resistance movements has sharply declined.

Outlets like Drudge Report and MSNBC have seen significant viewership drops, while platforms like X (formerly Twitter) face progressive disengagement as figures like Nicolle Wallace and The Guardian pull back.

The “Resistance 2.0” appears muted compared to 2016, with fewer protests, diminished media energy, and a waning appetite for anti-Trump political books.

Critics worry this apathy could weaken opposition to Trump’s more radical second-term agenda, leaving backlash dependent on his upcoming actions.

Sorry, who's looking to corporate media for "the resistance" ? Seems like a terribly stupid metric to judge this.

[-] chakan2@lemmy.world 33 points 1 month ago

The Rs...it was interesting, when Trump was declared guilty I watched Fox and Newsmax to see if they had actually reported on it.

They WERE calling for a rebellion. They mentioned the 2nd amendment a couple of times, and the rhetoric was generally violence.

The message conservatives get is very different than what the rest of the world gets.

Yeaah, but they have a similar response whenever they learn a unisex bathroom opened in an airport. It's entirely unsurprising people lacking two braincells to rub together would look to billionaires to call for an "uprising".

[-] Alteon@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Exactly. I think most of us have identified that the fucking corporate media can't be trusted to be reliable. This is partially their fault for sane-washing Trump over and over again.

That said, there is resistance. Please check out the subreddit /r/SomethingIsWrong2024.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

Is there a reddit-free option?

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 5 points 1 month ago

"We were really excited for all your money when Trump won! Wahhhh!"

[-] AnarchoSnowPlow@midwest.social 66 points 1 month ago

If you're looking to the drudge report for resistance, you were always going to end up disappointed.

The resistance is out your front door. Touch grass. Get involved in local mutual aid groups, find the people doing good things in your community and help them.

NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE YOU. WE PROTECT US.

[-] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

Same for MSNBC, really. Cable news is owned by people who have a conflict of interest with the working class.

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

MSNBC called Sanders supporters "brownshirts" but had no such vitriol regarding the January 6 insurrectionists.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 12 points 1 month ago

Fucking seriously... One asshole even said if Bernie won he'd be put against the wall like having a fucking firing squad aimed at him...

Anything to keep their millions and millions from decreasing slightly... Even fascism apparently.

[-] chakan2@lemmy.world -3 points 1 month ago

Uh...the big We is fucking stupid. It's not stopping anything at this point. That ship has sailed.

[-] AnarchoSnowPlow@midwest.social 9 points 1 month ago

"The big we" isn't some amorphous blob online or something organized by some national group. It's your trusted friends, family, and neighbors.

No, nothing was ever stopping political or business swamp creatures. That ship really sailed in 1980. Or in the early 1900s. Or in 1860. Or in 1776. Take your pick.

Decentralized groups of people just trying to help each other out is how we rise out disasters when there is no help coming. Whether that disaster is natural or man-made. It doesn't really matter whether or not you believe it, it's empirically evident.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 59 points 1 month ago

Alternative headline: "People are leaving ineffective platforms and outlets and looking for better ones."

The idea that MSNBC is part of the resistance is laughable.

[-] nondescripthandle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

We tried to tell you at the war in the middle east protests.

We tried to tell you at Occupy Wall Street.

We tried to tell you during Bernies 2016 run.

We tried to tell you during Black Lives Matter.

We tried to tell you during Bernies 2020 campaign.

Its been decades and now we're tuning out for our own sanity and the media and politicians are going to have to solve the problems they made and exacerbated themselves.

Cable news making outraged noises was never about saving you, it was about attracting your attention to monetize it

[-] lettruthout@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Succinctly put.

[-] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 32 points 1 month ago

Lmao.

Republicans own 90% of our media.

This article was fucking stupid.

[-] nondescripthandle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Even the media that appears left leaning is run by them, if you think NBC executives voted for Kamala I have a bridge to sell you, huge, fantastic, the best bridge.

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago

This is where the “both sides are the same” narrative does hold true. The base is different, but at the top are the wealthy who care only about their power and wealth. Human concerns do not touch them except at the extremes, so they will never really care about the lower class.

[-] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago

What Resistance? This what people voted for! The time to resist was at the ballot box.

As for viewership drops, of course the media is losing viewers and journalists losing subscribers (WAPO). Most of the people consuming that type of political content are liberals who obviously didn’t appreciate the medias game of normalizing Trump and right wing rhetoric.

You expect Liberals to just sit there and watch as panelist blame “Wokeness”, “DEI” and Dems being too establishment for Trump winning? No, Liberals know that’s bullshit, they know Joe Biden’s domestic track record, and his pro working class stances.

The only ones buying that are far left chaos agents (a majority of this sub), and far right MAGAs (a majority of Twitter).

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 10 points 1 month ago

The time to resist was at the ballot box.

the quiet part out loud. :( pay attention to why you said this. politics and loving your neighbor does not end on election night.

[-] growsomethinggood@reddthat.com 24 points 1 month ago

I think a lot of ordinary people on the left in America have learned from the first term that being glued to the news cycle does nothing but harm your mental health. Trump is going to do and say outrageous things, but ruminating on them only serves as a demotivator- unless you live in a place with a senator on the border about an issue or appointment, you really don't have any power to prevent a Matt Gatez appointment or whatever. The outrage machine of corporate media no longer serves as "being informed". People who are worried are taking action in their community, building up local and remote contacts, and supporting those affected by these soon to be enacted policies proactively. Turning the TV off is a good thing for that.

Check in with your friends and family. Understand local and state politics and make sure you turn up there. Make plans for when things go south.

[-] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago

This for sure. My mental health was so awful during Trump's first term. I spent 4 years just... breathing. Barely able to focus on work or family because I felt there were just bigger issues to worry about. I've pulled way back from social media in general and I feel healthier for it.

I'm always going to help people at a local level. I'm always going to be a safe place or safe ear for the few folks it's actually in my power to help. But I can't take on the rest. This is what the American people on average want, and it is clear to me that until they get their blood, they won't be satisfied.

I'll see you fuckers in 4 years to try to elect someone who can fix... whatever is left.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

corporate news: o noes! our revenue-per-click is dropping! Quickly, put some left-baiting headlines up! Go! go! go!

They only acknowledged us when they lose and when the dems no power to change anything. Never seen a dem win followed by tons of articles about the progressives.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That was 2016/17 pretty much. Ending more-or-less with the million woman march.

[-] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They are worried that people aren't buying their charade anymore. The duopoly is not working and that leaves a power vaccuum for an actual workers movement that can threaten them. People aren't outraged at Trump because they are outraged at the system, at the economy, at the crimes we commit and thats dangerous.

[-] SkyNTP@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago

Institutions will not save democracy. Democracy is accountable to only the people.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 8 points 1 month ago

honestly good on us for learning and quitting the cycle of clicking the outrage headlines and instead working together to minimize damage as a community

the resistance, if it exists, is you, not some profit seeking ad-running corporate entity. i hope things keep being this way.

[-] Ep1cFac3pa1m@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

This time I want Republicans to get everything they want. Either:

A) my worldviews and beliefs are completely wrong and the ~~Nazis~~ MAGAs really will create a utopian paradise, or B) everything will go to shit and I can finally stop hearing them pine for the fascist hellscape they don’t think they’re creating

[-] mrbeano@lemm.ee 11 points 1 month ago

C) everything goes to shit, and somehow of course, it's the left's fault again! Tada!

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Everything went to shit during Trump’s first term. People decided to conveniently forget all of that and re-elect him. It’s bizarre.

[-] cmoney@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I predict everything goes to shit but all the ~~born again nazis~~ MAGA idiots still somehow think it's not their lord king tRumps fault cause transgender kids are still around maybe or because sleepy joe and obama just did so much damage the country couldn't be saved despite tRumps dream team of pedophiles and worm riddled brain guy.

[-] theunknownmuncher@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

🙄 Jesus give us a break, it's not even January, and we literally just had to endure like 2 fucking years of ridiculous campaigning. It's fine for people to tune out a little bit for now.

[-] morrowind@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Honestly the realest response, I'm young, but this is by far the most exhausting election I've seen

[-] hperrin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

What can we fucking do? Literally nothing.

The best we’ve got is keeping our local governments functioning, because the federal government is about to come crashing down. Hopefully California will nope out of this dumpster fire of a country.

[-] randon31415@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

People didn't learn how bad Trump could be because there were extraordinary measures to stop him. This time around, as long as it doesn't end voting or kill people, I think we should just let every ridiculous thing pass to show people "why" Trump is bad.

[-] whithom@discuss.online 2 points 1 month ago

Nobody is willing to do what needs to be done.

[-] thebigslime@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Two tried. One missed, the other was apprehended.

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com -4 points 1 month ago

The resistance used to think there was a better option. After 4 years of genocide joe, that's no longer assumed.
