PS5 Slim!

The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte. If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the U.S. at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. It will continue to roll out globally in the following months. Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available.

A horizontal stand will be included with the new PS5 model. Also a new Vertical Stand compatible with all PS5 models will be sold separately at 29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY.

I'm surprised I haven't seen anybody mention how this is a price increase for the digital version. This one costs $50 more.

[-] dutchkimble@lemy.lol 16 points 1 year ago

Not only did they increase the price, but they reduced the quantity too! Classic corpo move

Shrinkflation! Sony should be ashamed...

[-] gladoz@reddthat.com 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Because is not like the previous digital version, now they are the same but there is an option that includes the CD Drive and one that doesn't include it but can be purchased separately in the future (digital version)

[-] Spellinbee@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Yeah, but if you don't care about the possibility of having physical discs, it's still a price increase.

[-] phillaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

If you don’t care about the possibility of having physical discs, price probably isn’t a large factor to you.

[-] any1th3r3@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

I believe this price increase only applies to the US and Japan (where the Digital SKU is around ¥50,000 atm afaict), as far as what's been announced. UK and EU pricing remains similar to the existing one.

Shrinkflation strikes again

"Vertical stand sold separately" no they did not...

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago

To this day I'm still afraid to orient my consoles in a vertical position, all thanks to the Xbox 360.

[-] DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Its fine honestly better for air flow as hot air rises. Just don't restrict air flow and you will be fine in any position.

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Did that cause issues on the 360? I'm not a console gamer myself

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 5 points 1 year ago

Turning it on cause issues with the 360.

Basically the problem was they used some kind of substandard solder that wasn't rated for the temperatures the 360 got to. So it would invariably crack which would cause the traces to become disconnected.

If you then turned it on its side the traces completely fell off the board and then you had a dead 360. As long as you left it flat the traces would just stay in the same place and when you next turned on the 360 it would remelt the solder and a kind of repair itself, until the next time the solder cracked.

But even then it wasn't reliable, because if you knocked it then the solder pads wouldn't line up anymore and you'd have the same issue.

I think I went through about 5 before I finally got one which didn't have the defect.

[-] Psythik@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

The main air intake was on the bottom of the console (when in a vertical position), so you were restricting airflow unless you placed it horizontally.

[-] li10@feddit.uk 18 points 1 year ago

Have they reduced the height at all?

That’s the only thing I’d really care about, as the height of the current PS5 is bloody inconvenient and makes it an eyesore.

[-] weedwhacking@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Digital slim edition: Approx. 358 × 80 × 216 mm (width × height × depth)

Digital “OG” edition: 390mm x 92mm x 260mm (width × height × depth)

Looks like the “width” (horizontal, height when vertical) went down 32mm, a small reduction

[-] reallynotnick@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Digital slim: 358 × 80 × 216 mm(width × height × depth)

Digital old: 390mm x 92mm x 260mm

[-] MooseLad@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Less than half an inch, so not really enough to make it more pleasing to look at lol

[-] weedwhacking@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

32mm difference, closer to an inch and a half

[-] MooseLad@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You're right, I wasn't thinking of how the Playstation was sitting when they said height, of course the original was taller than ~3.5 inches lol. Thanks for the correction.

I’m surprised they’re sticking with two SKUs. Especially with the digital having a disc add-on option

Edit: I’m starting to suspect the disc option is just the digital with the detachable drive in the box. Makes the most sense actually

[-] Kuro@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Not sure about that, the disc drive doesn't look removable in the picture

[-] Spellinbee@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

The drive appears to attach to the side and they have a side panel cover it up. So with the side panel on, it wouldn't look detachable.

[-] Kuro@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Ah, that makes sense

Looks like the disc drive is now part of the face plate, not the actual PS5 and can be swapped out

Thanks for the confirmation! From a manufacturing standpoint, this is a huge design win for Sony. Should have been like this from the start

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

50% more expensive in euro than in dollars? Big oof

[-] zaphod@feddit.de 6 points 1 year ago

I'm amazed, they made it even uglier.

[-] the16bitgamer@programming.dev 0 points 1 year ago

Looks better than the PS4 Pro and slims

[-] PBPunch@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I'm happy the detachable disk drive was a real idea. I won't be buying this right now because I just bought the Spiderman PS5 as a second station for my family room.

[-] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, ok... where's PS5 Pro? (・へ・)

[-] reallynotnick@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Rumors have been late 2024 at this point. So if it is real, might have to wait another year.

[-] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 year ago

So nothing's changed, I thought the Microsoft leaks that revealed plans for mid-gen upgrade would perhaps prompt some kind of hint at least from Sony.

[-] reallynotnick@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I mean those were just similar refreshes to what Sony did today, so Sony is ahead of the game. Microsoft had no Pro style console planned so no need for Sony to show their hand. Sony didn't even announce the PS4 Pro until just a couple months before it came out. Plus they want people buying consoles now, not waiting for a year.

[-] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Are there even any games worth playing yet on PS5? I would consider it for GTA 6 or Red Dead 3, but everything else I want runs fine on other devices.

[-] Noodle07@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

No idea myself but how are games like cyberpunk running on the ps4 now?

[-] Kuro@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

They somehow made it look even worse
