This is why I always ask myself "do I need this thing" and if the answer is no I buy it anyway for the small dopamine hit.

[–] Martineski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 years ago

I didn't expect the ending. lol

The smile in frame 3 is really subtle

[–] Martineski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

He also smiles in frame 2.

Human brains are amazing. You can't really focus on the differences in the two drawings because it's too small (at least I can't). But you still see it smiling in the left and unhappy in the right frame.

Purple is also a less happy color than yellow.

[–] doofer_name@feddit.de 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

So thats why purple is my favourite colour

[–] Micromot@feddit.de 3 points 2 years ago

It's mine too, I love being unhappy

My pattern is I’ll find something new that I want and I’ll order it, but before it arrives I’ll research absolutely everything about it—specs, reviews, unboxing videos—that I’ll squeeze every drop of joy out of the purchase before I even have it..

[–] DrDominate@lemmy.world 20 points 2 years ago (2 children)

And then you're left with the anxiety if you made the right purchase as you wait for it to arrive on your doorstep and a tinge of lingering regret if it doesn't 100% meet your expectations.

[–] DrMango@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Or like, buyers remorse but before you even have The Thing because you impulse bought The Thing and THEN started down a deep research rabbit hole about The Thing and found out that you could definitely get a Thing that meets your needs much better than The Thing you bought except The Thing hasn't even arrived yet.

The first page I look at on a website is the return policy.

[–] MetaCubed@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I had to start forcing myself to do the research beforehand. It truly ruined any joy i might have gotten out of The Thing when I just sat there researching The Thing about a day after The Thing was ordered and slowly realized it wasn't the correct Thing.

[–] DrMango@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I just default to buying the best possible Thing that I can so when I do the research it turns out that all other Things are inferior anyways. (I still did not need The Thing)

[–] MetaCubed@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I just bought the best possible Thing yesterday

[–] hackitfast@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

This is what I do especially if it's expensive. If I find myself researching it more and more, it means I really want it and will very likely use it a lot. If I lose interest on day one it's not worth it.

[–] Seasm0ke@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Hey I do that too! Sometimes I pair it with researching thing, selecting the thing, then putting off buying so long that the new thing came out so then I have double the research and no thing.

[–] sheogorath@lemmy.world 27 points 2 years ago (2 children)

The trick for me to reduce impulse buys is to see if I want to buy the thing 3 days in a row. If I kept thinking about buying the thing on the third day, I'll buy it.

[–] Psythik@lemm.ee 6 points 2 years ago (2 children)

So what you're saying is that I should get that $400 thermal camera, then...

[–] V0lD@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I too, ended up buying the power armor 18T after telling myself not to impulse buy a thermal camera phone for 3 days

[–] Schmeckinger@feddit.de 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I got a $250 one and it helped see where I had a water leak in the wall.

[–] Dindonmasker@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 years ago

For me if i want something but i'm not sure if i should buy it. I just forget about it. If i want it again in the future i think about it but forget it again. After that i might think about it again and get it that time. XD

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (3 children)

The trick is to delete your Amazon account

[–] Rolando@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Or at least unsubscribe from Prime. That way you can still order stuff in case of emergency, but they bombard you with so many "come back to Prime!" messages that you remember how obnoxious they are.

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Thankfully I live in an area where I'm within a bus ride of a few general stores. Otherwise I like getting stuff from small vendors when possible

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

... then make a NEW one

[–] Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 years ago

Ok but like 🤡 I dont go out but I need a dozen going out outfits yk?

[–] datelmd5sum@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You took your object out of the box? Amateur...

[–] RIP_Cheems@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago

You collect funky pops, don't you?

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] Martineski@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 years ago

No, I like it there.

[–] user224@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 2 years ago

You just made me think. What was the last thing I bought impulsively? I generally don't like spending money.

A pocket calculator for €2.65. I have a phone. I don't need it. But now I have a calculator, always ready in pocket.

Stupidest one? Probably A4 sticker sheets of DVD labels. They were cheaper than regular A4 paper because nobody wanted that. I mean, you can carefully peel it in one piece, and if you tape it over, you got nice stickers. How many? Well, it's 500 sheets of 6 labels each, so 3,000 DVD labels. That was like €1.70.
It was one of those 99+% discount sales. Usually this label paper is around €0.60/sheet (A4), which would land this at €300.

[–] shiveyarbles@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've been buying a ton of shit since I moved into a rental. It feels like it might be impulsive, but I get stuff with utility that will last 5-10 years

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

easy rule of thumb, wait 2 weeks and if you still remember that thing then go ahead and buy it.

[–] shiveyarbles@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Lol I don't have the patience for that

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 years ago

yeah that's the point, you'll likely completely forget about it and thus there's no need to buy the thing.

Thank god I am terrified of spending money. I impulsively do really stupid shit all the time but my fucked relationship with finance and value keeps the frivolous shopping at bay.
