Can I ask what makes it so urgent to get back onto reddit and not just leave it be?
I still visit reddit occasionally but I haven't logged in since they began requiring a phone number. It really is all bots and garbage now. It makes me sad for the old days, like seeing an aging actor who has had too much plastic surgery and looks like a plastic cartoon version of their younger self.
Hmmm, they didn't want a phone number from me.
they only want cool peoples phone numbers
lmao gottem
This reeks. I'd say forget reddit, but it sounds like the odds of it being a justified ban are high so I'm inclined to hope you find a way back there.
What's Reddit?
it's 4chan for hipsters
You can leave Reddit behind you and come here full time. But please be nice and don't drag Lemmy down with the same behaviour, in case you were rightfully banned.
I doubt that they fingerprinted your MAC address, but it's likely that they banned the IP address. Unless there's some weirdness with how your modem, router, and IP are configured, your ISP should assign you a new IP address after leaving the modem unplugged for a few minutes.
If I may add, reddit isn't worth this trouble, regardless of how benign it is. They handed you a reason to abandon their sinking ship. I suggest you take it.
Banning users based on IPs is extremely stupid. VPNs, CG-NAT or even just dynamic addressing.
Tbf I never once did I accidentally circumvent a ban, or ever get banned from reddit in the first place. I remember that's how a lot of folks got around it about 10 years ago, but browser fingerprinting has gotten far more complex than what I learned in that time. It's a long shot, but with that shitshow it could potentially still work
Are you using a VPN? I bounce around various exit nodes on my Mullvad account, and Reddit blocks more than half of them, and it always shows up as a ban page (despite the fact that I nuked my Reddit account years ago and am visiting anonymously). When I really want to get to Reddit, say because a question I have looks answered there, I just switch exit nodes until I find one Reddit hasn't blocked. Most of the time, I don't bother; I'm usually not that desperate to swim in the cesspool.
Well, look how much unique data your browser sends: https://www.deviceinfo.me/
You can fingerprint a user based on that. Probably just a different browser or device. You can try Mullvad browser which will get the same fingerprint with many other users, but that could also mean it will just be blocked already.
Or maybe TOR browser - Reddit has an onion site, maybe it can also be used for signup.
they can't use that for bans, as many people with default configs on common devices would be false positives. fingerprinting is only useful for ads, where a false positive just means someone gets a dildo ad instead of a car ad and you might as well treat a group of people as some kind of target audience.
