  • Brush: Yaqi 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: Karve Overlander
  • Blade: Derby Premium
  • Lather: Barrister And Mann - Adagi - Soap
  • Post Shave: Barrister And Mann - Adagi - Aftershave

Good shave. Strange scent that I really enjoy. This is basically the avocado toast of my selections.

The Days Of Weckoning are upon us

  • Brush: Rubberset 400-3 with a 26 mm unbleached Zenith boar knot at 56 mm loft
  • Razor: Weck Sextoblade Med Prep
  • Blade: Kismet Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet (8)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Oceana
  • Post Shave: Ralon – Original
  • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Island Man

So, I came down with something, started AA with fever and a splitting headache, and almost didn't post yesterday.

Today I'm feeling marginally better, and I actually enjoyed my shave. Three passes with a Kismet, Soft Heart, and Oceana is a pretty great combination.

  • Brush: Maggard 24mm G5 Synthetic
  • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 3 SB
  • Blade: Personna 74 (9)
  • Lather: Barrister & Mann - Lavanille - Soap
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Coniferous - Witch Hazel & Aloe

Whew. Love it. I enjoyed using /u/visceralwatch's Karve Overlander very much, but going back to this razor... I have as much thrill for the Era Level 3 as he has for the Overlander.

To be fair, this blade is hitting its stride, and the past couple of shaves with the Overlander were with a different blade. I take back what I said about the Overlander feeling like a Henson. After a few shaves, I disagree with that. It "gives you the angle" without "giving you the angle". It works great for n00bs and experts alike.

One more shave left in this tub. It started falling apart today, so I might have to treat it like a sample tomorrow.

In other news... my FAVORITE old Reddit app (Sync for Reddit), was released as Sync for Lemmy. I'm pretty stoked!

I also noticed as I was playing around with the Jerboa app... by changing the default sort in that app to "New", that setting carried over to the browser app. I prefer "new" for shaving stuff, especially with the threaded nature of r/wetshaving and sub.wetshaving.

Is there a browser setting that does the same? LMK in the comments.

I don't think that there is. This is what it looks like here:

I haven't found a way of choosing a default order within a post (AFAIK, this is not possible in jerboa or wefwef).

Me too. I'm still using it for Reddit (revanced), but I downloaded it for Lemmy. It's working great!

[-] walden@sub.wetshaving.social 1 points 1 year ago

That's cool. I didn't know you could do that. Do you just use your own API key or some such?

[-] bmac92@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's very simple. There are a lot of guides on how to do it if you're interested.

2023.08.02 SOTN (#UNCHALLENGE shave #2):

  • Prep: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleanser

  • Brush: AKA Brushworks Amethyst Watchman with 26mm AP Shave Co G5C

  • Razor: Gillette Slim Adjustable

  • Blade: Gillette Perma-Sharp (2)

  • Lather: Seaforth! Sea Ice Lime

  • Post Shave: Stirling Mentholated Unscented Witch Hazel and Aloe, Seaforth! Sea Ice Lime Aftershave Splash, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry

AA Day 2! I typically don't shave every day, so this is going to be an interesting month for me. Did a 2 pass shave (WTG & XTG). Not a bad shave. The underside of my jaw, though, remains to be a challenge area. My goal for the month is to master that area.

Sea (Sp)ice lime was my AA scent for the last two years. So nice for summer!

[-] bmac92@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

I agree. I prefer cooling soaps, so I went with SIL. My phone clocked 108°F today, so I'm happy about the cooling.

  • Preshave: Cold Water
  • Brush: Zenith 506U XS Horse 🐎
  • Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89
  • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (3)
  • Lather: The Goodfellas Smile Amber Fougère
  • Post Shave: Old Spice After Shave

With the Zenith horse, it's stoopid easy to get a lather going. The soap is a bit drying, but nothing major or disturbing.

Have a good night!

I've been curious about the Zenith horse brushes.

How is their break in behaviour? Do you enjoy using yours?

I rather like the Zenith horse, but I prefer my Semogue...

First: there are two types of Zenith horse brushes: the extra-soft (XS) and the normal ones. I have the XS. The XS is extremely soft (zero scritch) and has a total lack of backbone. If you like this kind of brush, go for it! I haven't tested the normal horse (yet?), but I slightly regret having taken the XS. The Semogue has a slight scratch, and a bit of backbone - which I prefer. It gives me the slight impression of exfoliation...

Concerning break-in behavior, it is extremely slow and basically unnoticeable. They're usable out of the box, but in the Semogue, there is noticeable bristle-splitting going on (starting after around 1 year of use, and still continuing). I would assume that the brush is softer now than in the beginning, but the change is too slow for me to notice (nothing like a boar brush). I haven't seen any splitting on the Zenith, but I use it more rarely, and have had it for less time - maybe it will still come.

Back on reddit, I did the statistics, and I use horse brushes most of the time - so I really enjoy them! If I had to choose one type of hair for my brushes, I surely would take horse.

Thanks for the detailed response! I think you just have me horse thrill.

I'm shocked to realise that I've been glancing at your SOTD posts all this time and never noticed that you mostly use horse 😅

Horse brushes are the best! 👍

@PorkButtsNTaters666
This amuses me, in all my time in this hobby (only 3 years, but still) I've only ever heard bad things about horse brushes, and the only one I've tried personally was a shitty cheap vie-long one, so I completely bought the antihype.

Looking forward to trying a Zenith one after #AustereAugust

I also heard bad things about Vielong horse brushes - though if I remember well @WegianWarrior@sub.wetshaving.social uses them from time to time.

As for the antihype: several wettubers (well, at least 2) sometimes use Zenith horse brushes, and have nice things to say about them: our own @sgrdddy@sub.wetshaving.social, and also Johann from Shave and Butcher.

I love my horses...

They are scratchier than badger though, so be warned.

[-] sgrdddy@sub.wetshaving.social 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I really like my Zenith XS horse brush. I could use it every day and be really happy.

Unlike PorkTater, I wouldn't say it has a "total lack of backbone", but yeah the tips can be though of that way. I think the core/bottom of the knot has more support than some super soft badgers, like silvertips.

The reason you only hear bad things about them is because 95% of them are bad, scratchy garbage that you can only love if you think you're saving animals from abuse. So that opinion is fairly obtained, at least.

The XS from Zenith is a different ... ahem... animal, though. I think the mane hair is softer, but has more flop. And the tail hair is what has that stiffness and scratch. It could be the opposite. But they change the brushes feel, for different models, by varying the percentages of where they take the hair. I don't know what magic LSD-fueled unicorn they pluck the hairs from for the XS, but I love it.

If my own XS was getting as much love as it deserved, I'd offer to buy Pork's XS from him, but I just have too many brushes.

@sgrdddy
Thanks, good to hear your take as well. I completely neglected the premium house brush discussion on the sub and here, apparently.

I've now ordered a non-xs Zenith horse, and it's 50 % horse mane, 50 % pony tail. I may have to try an xs too, later on😄
