Looks absolutely incredible. Having Squadron feature complete is such a huge milestone and it looks like they've really managed to make great use of all the tech they've developed over the many years of development.

Hopefully the polishing goes well, after all this time they really need to nail the release and have everything completely dialled in.

FYI, they've announced SQ42 being feature complete before. 2018ish I think.

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

I don't remember that. There was the infamous answer the call 2016 and a ramp up of promo material but they never made an announcement of feature complete iirc.

Looks good. But I backed years ago so my hype level is at the "meh, when it actually comes out we'll see" levels.

Soooo... how long will they polish? A year or two years? And will they scrap things like they used to?

But damn do I like what I saw.

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

Yeah this is the question for sure. What they showed looked pretty polished to me but I'm sure they're showing the best parts off for the trailer. It seemed like performance wasn't super great in a couple of spots as well unless that was just the stream.

My finger in the air guess is late next year, with maybe a date announced at citizencon but who knows. I think their decision not to announce a date until it's ready is a good thing though given their track record

[-] Banzai51@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

The player question for all of CitCon is When? They don't like to give dates anymore because they blew by those dates in the past.

I mentioned it in my day 2 impressions but I'll repeat it here as well: after years of waiting I'm not particularly invested in S42 - both because I don't have much hopes for writing and because I feel it slowed down progress on PU (part I actually care about) WAY more than I'd like.

Despite that I do have to say that seeing this showcase brought some of the initial interest back. Let's see if they can deliver something really worthwhile.

Meh, I backed for Sq42 and feel the pu stuff delayed Sq42

[-] Essence_of_Meh@kayb.ee 9 points 1 year ago

It's kind of funny reading this considering vast majority of CIG's resources has been focused on S42 for years.

I'm not gonna argue about it though. I'm fully aware people backed the project for different reasons and in situation like this there's no way to please everyone. I'm definitely happy for all the folks that are more interested in the single-player campaign than me.

Let's hope with all those recent improvements they'll finally be able to speed up the process and deliver something for all of us.

Remember, once Sq is completed they will actually have a finished product to sell people who think this is just a money scam. Also they would be able put the game in xbox and PlayStation ti draw in even more money.

[-] Essence_of_Meh@kayb.ee 4 points 1 year ago

That's true, but at the same time a lot of people who were going to buy it already did. Plus let's not forget they were planning 3 parts of squadron. Again, I'm not particularly salty about it as the important part is progress.

I wonder about consoles - these come with their own set of issues so it'll be interesting to see if they'll decide to port them somwhere close to the PC release or leave it as a potential income source for the future.

[-] Banzai51@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago

No way this game runs on consoles.

[-] Essence_of_Meh@kayb.ee 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That was the initial reason for making both projects PC only, with consoles always as a "maybe".

That said, depending on how much of a difference all the tech improvements make to performance (switching to vulkan, more performant cloth physics etc) it might be possible. I'm still playing current, unoptimized SC build on a pretty outdated hardware (and extremely outdated CPU) while getting pretty decent framerates so it might be possible.

Either way, let's wait for a PC release first and not worry about potential ports for now :P

[-] Banzai51@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago

Just look at Cyberpunk 2077. The majority of problems were on console. You have to maintain a separate code base for each console, and sometimes each generation of console.

CIG doesn't have that level of competence.

[-] Essence_of_Meh@kayb.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Oh, I'm not saying this will happen anytime soon. CIG has plenty of work left to do as is. I just don't think the lack of power would necessarily prevent them from porting the S42 to consoles if they were really set on it. It would certainly require some sacrifices but let's not forget S42 is a single-player game with limited scope, we're not talking about porting Star Citizen.

I agree and disagree about CP2077. Yes, PC version had less issues but we have to remember two things:

  • CDPR decided to release the game on previous generation of consoles
  • management decided to release the game way before it was ready - for better or worse CIG's taking the complete opposite approach

While the current version of Cyberpunk on current gen consoles isn't perfect, it's apparently way better than it was before (that's what I gathered from the internet at least).

As for separate code bases... not really? It's not early 2000's when each port was a completely different game. These days vast majority of content is shared between versions, just scaled down where necessary. Add the fact that all of the current gen consoles are pretty much PCs and there's no need for huge code changes between them.

I do think CIG has competence to create a playable version of S42 for consoles. I don't think that even if it happens, it'll be anywhere near the PC release - there's just too much tech work left with what they have. Aiming for consoles simply wouldn't make sense (and would probably piss off a lot of whales who are still waiting for shit-ton of promised features).

If console version ever comes out I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up on next gen hardware - whenever that happens.

[-] Pasta4u@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Current consoles are 8 core zen 2 cpus so basicly a ryzen 7 3700 + Rdna 2 gpu basicly a radeon 6700 with 16 gigs of ram.

So there isn't a reason why this game can't run on them

Also this game still isn't out. If this is a 2025 release on pc that would likely be after a ps5 pro and could be very close to next gen consoles

[-] jet@hackertalks.com 4 points 1 year ago

Agreed. I feel like the single player game has completely derailed the multiplayer focus. Even if it's the best single player game in the world, ever, I prefer multiplayer games anyway. It's the other people that make the universe special.

[-] ceilingcelery@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Wow it's been ten years since backing the project, it almost seems surprising at this point that the game might actually release! Haven't been excited about this for a long time simply due to how long it's been but it will be a happy day when I can finally play this.

I don't see how this is any more believable than the previous videos. Especially for a studio known for false advertising.
