Quit Your Bullshit!

279 readers
1 users here now

Rules:

1: Bullshit must actually be called out.

Posts must be a screenshot of a lie/bullshit, and a call-out.

The lie and its direct responding call-out must be included in the screenshot(s) you provide. Context/call-outs in the title or comment section don't count.

Screenshots with overlaid text or other screencaps do not count: use them to call bullshit and screenshot that! Posts without proof will be tagged as such and could be subject to removal by the moderators.

2: Screenshots only. No links, stories, or videos!

Images / Screenshots only. Don't link to the location of the bullshit. No reddit and lemmy links allowed.

Don't link to a news article, or post a text story or a video. Your post must consist of screenshots only -- including the lie/bullshit and the call-out.

3: Remove all personal information -- even your own.

This decreases the likelihood of brigading/harassment and proves that we do everything we can to avoid it.

Basically, don't include a username that can be used to locate the bullshitter.

This means the reddit username, lemmy username, facebook name, twitter handle, and all other forms of identifying info (including your own username!) must be blocked. Posting user information in the comments circumvents this rule and will result in a ban.

4: Don't call bullshit on Trolls/Jokes/Memes/Bots/Honest Mistakes

Deliberate trolls or jokes don't belong here. This includes content from meme/joke communites -- jokes are made to be shared.

Posts involving honest mistakes don't belong here. Sometimes, people are wrong. Sometimes, users are mistaken or mislead. Being wrong isn't bullshit. Being a hypocrite isn't bullshit. It happens.

Calling out repost bots can also fall under this rule.

5: Political content is not allowed.

We don't want to push any political agenda. We don't support one side or the other -- we're simply observers. Basically, any content taken from a political subreddit or mentioning politicians will be removed. For political discussion head over to /c/Politics

Current news events may fall under this rule. Mods discretion.

If your post falls into a grey area, don't be afraid to message us before posting!

6: Stay civil. No hate speech or slurs!

Remember the human. Keep it civil. Don't use racial slurs or homophobic language.

7: Don't link to the bullshit, the bullshitter, or any covered info.

Don't name the bullshitter in the comments, or link directly to the bullshit involved. Similarly, don't request personal info/usernames that are covered up in the post.

8: Downvote/Harassment-brigading isn't allowed. No witch-hunts.

This subreddit does not allow downvote-brigading, harassment-brigading, or witch-hunting. This behavior will NOT be tolerated, and is the quickest way to net a permanent ban. Always follow Lemmiquette. If a post generates a downvote brigade, it will be removed even if it doesn't violate the other rules. We are merely observers.

9: Common Repost.

Posts in the Common Reposts Folder are not allowed to be reposted.

If the bullshit you're posting isn't in the folder, it's up to the moderators to determine if a repeated post is "common" or not.

If you repost old content with an identical title, we'll assume you're a bot and give you a permanent ban.

10: Recent Repost.

Please, check if your post has already been posted recently before submitting. Also, no reposts of Top/Popular posts!

Final space was amazing, I was sad when it was cancelled

The link above is to the graphic novel that finishes the series

holy shit international shipping is 50% of the book price (which is steep already). I wanted to support the guy but shipping is waaaay too much.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

$182 is the price. And it's a preorder.

GodSpeed was the spiritual successor but didn't get a lot of funding

The sad part was that it was basically removed everywhere and even the creator didn't have the files for some legal reason. Was a pretty loud issue sometime ago.

[–] Im_old@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Pretty sure it's still available on torrent 😄

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah but the source files and stuff. You can't go to a network or a streaming platform and give them torrents. It was a huge waste and the creator wanted them so they aren't lost

I'm just here for Mooncake.

Why would you post this in the same subreddit as the original post that probably won't be exactly brimming with content these days?

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Might just be a bot. I'd see tons of comments relevant to post they were on but not relevant to the specific comment they replied to that you could find the original source of by searching that very post's comments. They were almost always upvoted, even though many were aware of the pattern, simply because so many more weren't aware of it.

The owner of the account probably isn't even aware of what posts their bot is stealing, let alone that it was discovered. Though it might have code to detect detection to try to delete the posts before a moderator/admin steps in and bans the account entirely.

This is why I'm glad Lemmy doesn't have a karma system. Cuts down on this bullshit.

[–] CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That cuts both ways since there's also not really any consequences to getting downvotes.

[–] Smokeydope@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Which is a good thing. What consequences should there be to having a bad take? Getting your comment pushed down from sorting as well as getting publically ratio'd and verbally lectured in replies by the members of small community you are part of is consequence enough IMO.

I don't think the bad comment needs to be autoremoved/hidden just cause it has 10 downvotes or whatever that kind of thing encroaches on a censorship slippery slope. Theres a report button and moderators for anything actually against community guidelines.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'd also say that removing bad takes instead of arguing against them can help further the belief in those bad takes because someone who believes in good faith might but be aware of counter arguments that might make them change their mind.

If only the proponents of ideas are allowed to discuss them in their own spaces, then that's the only place where people curious about them will be able to find information.

And even if the one arguing the bad take refuses to consider other options, IMO public discussion forums are more about the lurkers reading them than those commenting, even if the latter makes up the entire visible community. Don't argue for the sake of the one you're disagreeing with, argue for everyone who thinks they might have made a good point but haven't decided yet.

These last few days I've been thinking about your last comment about public discussions being about the lurkers and the value of having that exchange from an outside perspective.

Every now and again I have to pick the choice between engaging in an internet argument/ debate or ignoring them, taking a break from the internet, and touching grass. I usually pick the second. But I keep thinking of this comment and wondering if I shouldn't put up more or a resistance instead even if my opinion is a 'wrong' one.

I dont know, a long time ago I decided that it was better for time and mental health to not really argue back and forth with people.

Im unlikely to unchange your perspective or exchange ideas in a meaningful way, much more so if were both perocupied with defending our ideas while dismantling the others. I think about that guy who wrote 30 something different ways to 'win' an argument by various conversational/psychological tricks and finally understood that for a lot of people it's about being 'right' and 'winning a battle' not intelectual honesty and coming to better understanding with the other person.

Why even bother on a certain group ideologies "home turf" discussion fourm,or against someone who lives to write 10 paragraph essays deconstructing everything you say just to prove how right they are.

So how much value is there to be gained by verbally resisting the community ratio, or trading five paragraph essays with someone who lives and breathes debating politics, compared to just taking the L and moving on with life?

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, it's hard to tell if it really is worth the effort. I don't think a back and forth essay debate is worth the time they usually take but maybe just one person will get thinking more critically because of it. Or maybe a response will make me rethink my own position and either end up at a new position or being better informed about my original position.

Glad to have prompted some thought on the matter in any case :)
