Curved shields are better against spears, arrows, and light swords. Flat are cheaper and better against axes, flails, heavy swords, pikes, and blunt force body attacks.
Having zero experience in design and just talking out of my ass, it might be easier to get that curve lined up with blocky pixels rather than trying to smooth it out in higher quality.
I noticed that as well, and I think the curved shield makes more sense
