A bit about me. (leminal.space)
submitted 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) by PhilRudland@leminal.space to c/Theremin@leminal.space

I'm Phil, born in 1952 and took up playing the Theremin in December 2022. I play on a Subscope Voicematic V120 made by Dominik Bednarz in Germany. I have limited practice time, so my standard is reasonable rather than good. My learning has come from Carolina Eyck through her "Art of Playing the Theremin". Up until recently I was using r/Theremin on Reddit, but have now moved away from all corporation controlled social media. I post my Theremin videos on PeerTube and use Mastodon as my main social media. I live with my partner Hayley, two cats and three fish tanks in Hampshire where we work as gardeners. I would love this to become a good replacement for r/Theremin.

Welcome! I suggest you also post about this community to the community New Communities to help people discover it.

I have no personal experience with the theremin. All I can say is that I appreciate it in one of my local dark synth acts The Night Terrors...

If you see it use it. If you don’t see it build it. Thank you for making this space. There is a movie I saw once, possibly called Theremin, which I saw once at a local art theater. I wonder if it’s findable. It’s a wonderful documentary about the instrument, it’s creator, and the people who played it. Ah Ha! I’ve found it on IMDB: Theremin: An Electronic Oddesey (https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0108323/)

What drew you to the theramin, Phil? How do the cats and fish like it?

For some reason the sound haunted me. I resisted for years until I finally bit the bullet and now I love it. As to the cats and fish, the cats tolerate it sometimes, at other times they leave the room. Maybe that is due to how I'm playing, lol. The fish seem to enjoy it.

Lovely, and ya, it does have such a unique timbre to it, eh? Any group or song inspire you to play? Like did you hear good vibrations and have a eureka moment?

Not really, I enjoy a lot of music and particularly bands like Goldfrapp, David Bowie, Massive Attack, Pink Floyd etc Probably the thought of playing along with Pink Floyd inspired me. Definately listening to Carolina Eyck play was the biggest motivation.
