Is it something my instance mods can fix, would them defederating a long list of transphobic instances stop transphobic comments or do the instances who's communities I post in need to block more instances?

There has been a serial troll on an unmoderated instance harassing people here. We've defederated from that instance now. The troll can of course make accounts on other instances, but they'll get shut down and banned from moderated instances

If your instance defederates another one then your instance will not download posts or comments from members of that instance. You won't be able to join communities from that instance either. So afaik that is the most effective way to prevent seeing any content from or interacting in any way with members of transphobic instances. But I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in.

If you see any transphobia on this community please report it and it will be removed and the commenter banned permanently.

I guess I'm kind of confused -- by "on here" do you mean in this community, on blahaj.zone, or just on lemmy in general?

(I have not run into transphobia in any of those places, but I stick to a pretty small set of communities)

I feel like lemmy in general, but I have also seen a few comments here on my really awful selfie I posted

As Lemmy grows more popular and more people join, eventually more transphobes and other trolls will find a place on the site. If the mods of your instance defederate from instances that host transphobic communities or users, that would help. The instance that this community is hosted on has been doing a good job of that.

Disclaimer: Not MTF, just lurking communities/magazines.

Defederating helps for instances that are exclusively used for bigotry or prominently contains bigoted content but bigotry within your instance should be managed with active moderation. I haven't explored all of the features on Lemmy and kbin but there may also be features that allow you to curate your experience, which will hopefully reduce the transphobia you receive. Sorry that you had to deal with that on your posts.

This is not "bigotry within their instance"

This is targeted harassment originating from an unmoderated instance, which is exactly what defederating is for

I'm referring to bigotry that occurs on the same instance regardless of the source. Defederating helps if the bigotry comes from accounts registered on different instances but it doesn't stop them from making accounts on the same instance to harass people, nor does it stop people who already have accounts on the same instance to start harassing people. This is where moderation comes in.

Alternatively, some instance admins restrict their registrations to manual approval to limit the possibility of new trouble.

That isn't what is happening here

This is what's happening here.

And yeah, trolls can just register a new account, but if they're doing it on an instance with active admins, they don't last long.

Thanks for clarifying the situation. In that case, yeah, defederation pretty much solves it.

And yeah, trolls can just register a new account, but if they’re doing it on an instance with active admins, they don’t last long.

Which should be standard but unfortunately instances aren't created equal. At least with the instance you're running, it seems to be going well. Keep up the good work.

Commenting for support! Keep your chin up! 🖤

You might want to look at other instances. Artemis.camp has a great group of mods that are always trying to get rid or or outright defedirate from a instance that have this kind of content.

That's not the issue. This is a trans instance aggressively moderated by a trans admin and trans community moderators. The problem is, the community is one of the larger more obvious trans communities on lemmy, and is being targeted for hate by bigots. We are shutting them down as soon as they show, but we can't get them before they spew their bigotry. A different instance won't solve that limitation :\
