I agree with the sentiment that loli shit is disgusting, but the problem is that so many of you sexless prudes go in looking for shit to be offended by and start projecting onto shit that's fine. Like the character Kusano in Sekirei is fully gross, a disgusting pedo-bait character that simply should not exist in the story, period. That shit should absolutely be rallied against.

But then y'all bring up shit like Momo from MHA like it's the same thing. It's fucking not, at all. A post or near post-adolescent character wearing titillating attire in much the same way that comparable real life pop stars do is just not even remotely on the same level as actual children being depicted as sexual viable partners, especially in the context of a story like MHA where the protag is a literal high schooler expressing romantic interest in his age-appropriate peers.

And "glorifying unhealthy relationships" is fine enough critique I suppose but one that hardly applies solely, or even primarily, to manga and anime.

Almost every rom-com I can think of.

Half the drama in all romance, not just rom-coms, would be entirely avoided if relevant characters were engaging in healthy adult communication. Anime is far from the worst offender in the unhealthy relationships regard.

[–] sdfric88@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 6 days ago

So true. I'd even go so far as to say that healthy relationships are rarely displayed in fiction full stop, because they're usually not interesting. Typically they're limited to side characters in a healthy relationship who are meant to be the "straight man" for the main character to be eccentric around.

I man how many Americans show would pass that. Doesn't glorify unhealthy relationships covers a lotof stuff.

Working in manga, the amount of titles I have to throw out of consideration for licensing because of these issues is insane

  • Oishinbo - about a newspaper food reporter / gourmet
  • Hinomaru Sumo - about a high-school sumo wrestler
  • Hyouge Mono - about a Sengoku-era aesthete
  • Warau Salesman - about a vengeful demon who punishes unhealthy urges
  • Kaiji - about a gambling addict (who usually has to develop trust to survive)
  • Onihei - about an Edo-period crime investigator

Does Inuyasha promote bad relationships? 🤔

I mean, Inuyasha himself is constantly hung up on his dead ex-girlfriend, and his dead ex-girlfriend still hates Inuyasha for killing her, even though he didn't and she fucking knows it was actually Naraku.

Meanwhile his current maybe girlfriend is only like 16 and he at least a hundred years old.

I thought about this a lot the other day.

Its "justification" is in that era girls go married off even younger than that.

That monk dude has to turn away a girl who's.. 14(?) after she asked him to take her with him and that she'd bear his children.

Personally, in that setting I think it's fine as long as they are not like fanservice to the viewer and its actually plot relevant. The monk asking her originally is more for humor as it was clearly shown as ridiculous and when it was more "legal" he took it more seriously and shot it down. That kind of humor is definitely a product of its era (wasn't the age of consent in Japan like 12 until less than a few decades ago?)

Also regarding Kagome, this anime was written by a woman and one of the main demographics is schoolgirls who want their heart to flutter by imagining themselves in a pseudo-isekai. Not saying it makes it right but it personally doesn't bother me because I get why stories like that exist coughTwilightcough

EDIT: The constitution set it to 13. But most prefectures up-ed it to 16 in recent decades apparently

I swear, anime fans can't keep getting away with their soft-pedophilia.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Fans? My brother in Christ, this is as often as not entirely the artists.

I'll be happily enjoying my Sci-Fi action/comedy slice of life and some anime director thick in the sauce busts into the studio and demands upskirts of the most obviously prepubescent girl in the rooster.

(Mostly) Nobody is asking for this!

Damn. I don’t watch anime but is this that widespread within the community? lol

[–] MangioneDontMiss@lemm.ee 5 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (18 children)

i think its somewhat widespread in every community. people tend to make a bigger deal of it than it actually is though (see: this post). for example the underage relationships shown in anime are usually pretty mundane in nature, as no one in anime ever has sex -- well outside of hentai.... but that is hentai...

I tried watching Dragon Ball but couldn't take that old guy sexualizing a teen. Explicitly saying he wanted to touch her boobs

[–] LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Having read through DragonBall recently, yeah the really early stuff is very lewd and perverted. By the start of the Z saga it's basically gone from what I remember. So it's very jarring.

How would parasyte be viewed?

[–] bob_lemon@feddit.org 6 points 6 days ago

The MC clearly has an unhealthy relationship with his parasyte, seeing how it ate his arm and such.
