Because as a society, we decided that haircuts are more important than human lives, so rather than implementing a coherent nationwide quarantine strategy, we let each state do what what wanted and the red states fucked it all up for everyone by not doing what they should, so instead of eradicating the disease, we've made it endemic and now it'll kill the most vulnerable among us forever.
Considering how many people live in the US, 300 doesn't seem like that many.
