Are you talking about smart water meters or smart electrical meters or smart gas meters ? Smart electrical meters just take a reading of how much electricity you’re using at any period and send it to your utility. They can do so by reading the power draw at a specified rate and totaling it. They can then send that data off to your utility or if you’re using your own meter, to the service backing it.
