Domestic tourists were “astonished” by what the South has dubbed “North Korea’s Waikiki”.

In case anyone was curious:

For the rest of the world: Temperature 31.6 C Real feel is 38.9 C

Westerners will see this and try their best to spin it as something evil.

They’re so self obsessed, the narrative I’ve seen is that this is a “fake” resort for the few western tourists they get. Like they spent hundreds of millions for a few western influencers who will just call them “fake cities” anyway

I'm Russian and this is shit. Same as Russia. Same as North Korea. The list is not full, but the fact that one side is covered in feces, doesn't mean that the other smells like roses. But perhaps it's too much for .ml to take in.

Does what's in the picture look like way more than 20k to anyone else?

I’m sure all those buildings are; well designed, well constructed, fully furnished and, well staffed ;-)

They are surpressed culturally they are not too stupid to build things.

Yeah and one thing autoritarian regimes are known for is sufficient oversight and regulatory rigour!

They are a piss poor insular dictatorship, it is reasonable to expect lacking standards and outdated methodologies as they do not have sufficient investment for cutting edge processes.

On top of that, there will likely be a lot of foreign contractors without much pressure to produce quality results.

Yeah like that navy warship a month ago. Cultural suppression in action

[slow clap]

I’m not picking on the people… hell, hopefully this project brings a bit of prosperity to the region. Down side, Russian tourists are a handful — search “what air defense doing” for someone awesome memes 😉

Probably the suggestion is related to authoritarian corruption, rather than average intelligence.

I think that if the glorious leader really believes in the project, them it may getsonw reasonably well, so it should be safe.

No, but they are smart enough not to put in too much effort.

They probably are, have you seen videos from western tourists in NK? They have super luxurious hotels costantly empty because there are at most a handful of people at one time. They really really want to be perceived as modern and civlized so they throw ludicrous amount of money to their ridicule tourism industry so they hope to attract foreigners. Of course this is done at the expense of their citizens

This guy watches Exploring the Unbeaten Path :-)

I imagine it would be like a taste of home to the Russian tourists, given the hospitality provided to the athletes when they hosted the Olympics in 2014

[–] sramder@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

You couldn’t pay me to be an Olympic athlete these days ;-)

  • Toilets that don’t flush
  • Toilets that do flush, but the outflow is just a ditch behind the “dorms”
  • Cipro required for a brief swim in the… we’re doing what now? Am I in the wrong line?
  • Seriously, I’m an olympic swimmer… o-l-y-m-p-i-c not the X-Games™???

one thing i am certain of, its that they're better built than the american drywall stuff.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

NK needs foreign money. They can't afford to cheap out that.

[–] sramder@lemmy.world -2 points 1 week ago

Bruh… they can’t afford to do anything but cheap out. It’s slow motion genocide. With nukes.
