From Ben Norton:

Far-right extremist Javier Milei won Argentina's presidential election.

Milei wants to: -legalize the sale of children and human organs -abolish public healthcare, education, and transportation -abandon monetary sovereignty and adopt the US dollar

He says his dead dog Conan speaks to him from the afterlife and advises him on economic policy.

Argentina was invited to join BRICS, but far-right president-elect Javier Milei has pledged to withdraw.

The extremist boasted: "Our geopolitical alignment is with the U.S. and Israel. We are not going to align with communists"

To be fair, it’s hard to discern proper economic policy from ghost barks and growls.

yeah maybe he's ignoring the dog maybe the dog is barking "no supply side economics don't work, transitioning to the dollar will make exports less competetive"

"Our geopolitical alignment is with the U.S. and Israel. We are not going to align with communists"

We won't align with the global South, instead we'll become lap dogs of the US Empire who's infamous for treating their allies like subjects. so-true For how much these fash psychos love calling their opponents things like stooges and cucks, they sure do love embracing that subservient role.

Reminds me of Zelensky. He's said the same about modelling Ukraine after Israel.

He says ... speaks to him from the afterlife and advises him on economic policy.

Translation: I'm not schizophrenic, hearing voices is a perfectly normal thing healthy people do!

I would never ask my dead cat for economic advice and economic policy

[-] HaSch@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 10 months ago

I asked my dead cat how to deal with my rent and he said "Mao"

So now Argentina is controlled by a dead dog? But why do people choose him?

[-] CountryBreakfast@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 10 months ago

It is way, way, WAY, worse than what it seems. That dog is a symbol of Spanish colonialism. The colonial soldiers used those dogs to rip people apart who resisted.

So now Argentina is controlled by a dead dog?

Yes... Actually no, it would actually is controlled by the same neoliberals that Milei said he was going to destroy. Mauricio Macri and Patricia Bullrich, the two people responsable for the current economical crisis.

But why do people choose him?

Socdems said they wouldn't pay the IMF loans, but then they decided to pay it. The economy started to collapse shortly after this, and they are suffering from a really bad drought which doesn't help their economy.

A truly insane platform, dude is going to fucking destroy the country. People are so wacked.

[-] DamarcusArt@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 10 months ago

I don't know enough about Argentina's demographics to know why they would vote for someone like this. All I know is that "platform" could probably win an election in my country and that is terrifying. I hope the people of Argentina don't suffer too much.

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 10 months ago

That platform could win on most latin american countries, blaming everything on leftists and licking the US boots is the latin american conservatives ideology.

Is a 76% participation rate common for Argentinian elections? I haven't seen anyone bringing I to question the legitimacy of the results. Idk enough about the people to judge if this sort of outcome was expected but I find it hard so many people support a dude that talks about how he hears voices from his dead dog.

mandatory voting. fines for people between 17 and like 60

[-] Oxossi@lemmy.ml 11 points 10 months ago

I don't think this guy will end his term. I think turmoil and social unrest is on the horizon for Argentina.

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 11 points 10 months ago

He doesn't have any support on the legislative, and he said he'll cut relations with both Brazil and China. He'll probably be dead in 6 months lol.
