I am of the minority who prefers this over the Cash cover.

I see both versions as different enough to be appreciated on their own merits.

Trent's version for me is the 90s music scene and the horrors of addiction amongst my fellow musicians who could not chase their demons away.

Johnny's version is older me experiencing the losses incurred of growing older and seeing friends and family gradually fade away.

Both very powerful pieces of art.

You aren't, most NIN fans that knew the song well before Cash did his cover album prefer the original.

They are very different versions which is what a great cover should be. The music video for Cash's version is a perfect fit for his version as well

It really shouldn’t be a minority thing though

The Cash version is fine as a cover because it feels like a cover, another take on the song.

But the original is absolutely dripping in atmosphere that really complements the lyrics.

Anyone who prefers the Cash version probably doesn’t have the volume up loud enough, or they’re using cheap headphones / tinny phone speakers to listen to music.
