Personally, I'm a bit surprised about it being a Discord server knowing how privacy conscious the Lemmy userbase usually is.
I guess that Matrix was considered to have a too high barrier?

personally i'm more comfortable with the UI and features of discord, plus i'm not too familiar with what the issues with privacy it has. could be that the mods here feel the same way, or that there would be a larger userbase on discord
Discord's privacy issue, is that it doesn't have any. Discord has complete access to everything.
Matrix is so complicated! It's one of those high barrier to entey federated systems. No one on lemmy would even be able to comprehend federation.
Might as well just give all your data to china to be on the safe side.
