I don't think I have ever heard of anyone who knew Kobe because he 'embodied values.' He played basketball well enough to be one of the top players. No one has ever mentioned him for any other reason.

He's known for the "Mamba mentality": his extreme belief in himself, insane work ethic, and near psychopathic drive to succeed.
I thought that was Michael Jordan who was well known for that, and popularized it first?
Kobe's nickname (self assigned) was the Black Mamba. Mamba Mentality was the book he wrote about his mindset. MJ was famously competitive but Kobe kind of took it to another level that bordered on sociopathic.
I know him for being good at basketball
That sounds toxic as hell.
Hence trhe rape.
Perhaps among those who saw him playing basketball at a top level, there were some who cared anough about the game to take note of his approach, but if you went out and asked 10,000 random humans, 'do you know who Kobe Bryant is?' and 'What is he known for?' approximately zero who say yes to the first part are going to answer the second part with anything about his personality. Even people who are almost precisely famous because of their outlook, like motivational speakers, are still better known as speakers than for their particular outlook.

Nor did I, but I don't care much about celebrities except for that they often break the rule of reasonable law.
Reasonable being non-fascist, in this time.
I'm the same. I care about celebrities only to the extent of what they're known for. Why bother going deeper than that? It's not like his criminal record is very relevant to his basketball records.
