I always thought that Pee Wee's exile for spanking it with a bunch of other guys in a porn theater was pretty performative. It was the suits at CBS that kept trying to turn his adult material into a kid's show in the first place. It was fine for them to snap back to reality and reconsider his audience, but blacklisting him from everything was too far.

I feel like a lot of people were more prudish back then. What he did didn't harm anyone.
I agree. It would have been a great opportunity for him to recast himself as an adult. Just like Rowan Atkinson doesn't need to be Mr. Bean.
It sucks that this is a question that has reasonable answers for it that has to get nuked because lemmy is full of censorous slime, who are self-conscious of their own censorous nature. Mean while they have posts on the front page pointing fingers of censorship at others.
The Red Scare and Lavender Scare both seemed really lame. I vote those.
Lindsey Ellis comparing Raya and the Last Dragon with Avatar: The Last Airbender
That was such bullshit over something so small.
It felt a lot more that she was getting cancelled because she was an easy target.
This post
Cancelling is pretty lame.
Is boycotting a better word or what about exiling?
If a person does something that a bunch of people don’t like why should they continue to give that person money?
Like Elon musk is a solid example where he is actively using his wealth support far right groups around the world and his fortune is largely based on the value of Tesla stock so if you disagree with his actions why would you buy a Tesla?
Boycotting isn't cancelling. Cancelling is witch hunting someone off of social media and destroying their ability to make money.
Let's take an example that happened to me. I live in Rural SC, USA. When COVID hit I was employed by a grocery store that was owned by a German company. So masks were mandatory. Even for customers. At the time I still had some social media accounts and wore a name tag. Told some knuckle dragging hillbilly that he had to mask up if he wanted to come inside. He was so incensed that he decided to troll my socials, my family's socials, several other workers socials and coordinated a complaint campaign targeting myself and a few other workers for "discrimination against his religious right."
That event was the tipping point for me nuking my socials and never wearing a name tag again. So, again, cancelling is pretty lame. For any reason. Yes even the ones you think are justified.
When you start thinking that social media actually matters, you've fully committed to voluntarily living in Plato's cave. So congrats on leaving.
Beyond that, I think you are being pretty grandiose to describe your experience as "getting cancelled".
I'd call someone making a concerted effort to make me unemployed as a cancellation attempt.
That is what happens when you get cancelled. It just happened to be that this was one person doing all the work rather than it getting distributed across the fan base.
People don't get cancelled. They get exposed for the horrible people that they are.
So you just blindly believe it every time?
Still waiting for all those examples of people who didn't deserve it.
I believe some examples in no particular order might be:
- Brendan Fraser: basically ousted by Hollywood after accusing someone of sexual assault.
- Central Park Five: should be obvious.
- Terry Crews: I think he was mainly treated poorly by certain parts of Hollywood after being open about sexual advances or something.
- Peter Norman: supported the 1968 Olympics civil rights salute and was effectively made a pariah in his career for it.
- Howard Dean: apparently getting a little too excited is apparently political suicide, but not wanting to grab your daughter by the pussy.
- Sinead O'Connor: being honest about Catholic abuse is apparently a no-no.
Now some of those are more being canceled by the elite, but still.
It's right here. Pee Wee Herman.
Always needing examples and evidence. Eyes always shut to examples and evidence.
So let me get this straight, every mob is right every time? This is your actual belief?
Nope.
