I work 988 and other crisis lines. Whenever people ask me "How do we raise awareness? How do we reduce suicide?"

I answer with "socialized Healthcare, strong worker's rights, defund police and increase funding for home assistance and mobile crisis, " and on and on and on.

Based. This whole idea that the world sucks but it's still your problem has always bothered me.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We can't have a system that requires money to survive, but have there be no guarenteed way to make money.

It's cruel torture

[–] MotoAsh@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

The suffering is the point under capitalism. It's forced slavery where society itself is the slave driver. The rich LOVE it.

[–] nucleative@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Who's problem is it... They all have problems too

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

See, we live in this thing called a society. And oddly enough, if you look at the whole society, there's more than enough to go around.

Our problem

"Awareness" is the liberal "thoughts and prayers".

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

We weren't worth 100$ in the end to them.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 24 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Don’t worry - help is always available! You can call 988 and have armed goons show up to escort you to a place where you get the shit beat out of you, they deliberately misgender you and blow vape smoke in your face!

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago

i really hate that “just talk to someone”.
that is a very substandard someone who will be talking to you if you’re broke… that or they put you in a terrible mental hospital….
my brother has been to several, and there’s a huge difference between institutions….

in Detroit they beat the shit out of him and chipped his tooth….

I've not heard this particular story, but similar. I am hopeful this didn't happen to you personally.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh it did. I got put on the “women’s ward” and was forced to spend 10 hours in a room with a man who physically assaulted me. I have PTSD from the incident, but you can be damn sure that I’m never seeking any form of mental health “care” again.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I am sorry, really I am. This is one of my greatest fears.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I’m just an alcoholic now lol

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Grew up with a 405 area code. The cops out there are absolute bullshit, they once pulled over to interrogate my friends and I waiting at a bus stop. My brown friends got a patdown and a bunch of questions about why we were hanging around an abandoned building, and I, the blonde girl, got a stern talking to about how hanging out with "the wrong kind" was going to ruin my life. Nevermind that we were literally standing at a bus stop, and we were all honors students, the cops saw an opportunity to be assholes, and they took it. Fuck 'em.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I marched at a Hoco parade in a 405 area code with a black guy. We got kicked out of the parade because the cop didn’t believe we belong there. We were wearing our colleges shirts and everything.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I could not get out of there fast enough, lol

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I need out. But my options look like a coffin. The troubled teen facility which sexually abused me as a child is suing me for $1500 and trying to make it so that I can’t be a mandatory reporter. I have zero money lol

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Even in Germany where help really is available getting it is a TOTALLY different thing and issue.

Now getting someone for your issue is an even more daunting task.

So yes, even here you might either have to wait years (after you yourself searched and found what you need yourself in your dire situation) or get into standard psych ward and some calming medication...

also, you will be arrested if you vape or smoke in public

[–] Stillwater@sh.itjust.works 29 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Awareness is probably a requirement to get any change made on those other things

[–] salacious_coaster@infosec.pub 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes. But. There are at least a dozen existential threats to society and humanity that we're all painfully aware of and nobody responsible is doing anything to fix them. Quite the opposite since about February, I'd say. I don't think lack of awareness is the issue.

[–] greenskye@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 days ago

Yeah. We're all the most 'aware' we've ever been. It's done jack shit. We just call it 'doom scrolling' now as if all the fucked up things in life are just another funny meme.

Awareness campaigns are just 'thoughts and prayers' for non-religious people.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

nobody responsible is doing anything to fix them

Hey now. Some people are actively working to make them worse.

We're fully through the looking glass on Climate Change, for instance. Like, 20 years ago, you had the son of an oil tycoon family negotiating the possibility of a private scheme for capping carbon emissions. And now you've got liberals hashing out the acceptable degree to limit EV imports and block expansion of solar and wind installations, while they support subsidized AI data centers powered by burning methane gas.

I don’t think lack of awareness is the issue.

One of the consequences of Awareness without any meaningful policy behind it is a sustained and energetic disinformation campaign by people profiting from the system's problems.

Like, its not even enough to inhibit a public policy of Affirmative Action. Now you've got to purge every minority or woman from administrative posts in order to prove you're not voluntarily implementing DEI. We don't talk about Defunding the Police, but about how far we can go in surveilling and arresting potential BLM/anti-genocide protesters. We openly persecute trans-people and "double Gitmo", because radical reversals in civil rights are in vogue. We double down on gerrymandering and try to reverse the popular election of progressive government officials, because the very idea of a popular democracy is revolting to the national press corps. We raise taxes on poor people, not to do anything about a budget deficit but because we think punishing anyone who isn't rich is some kind of civic virtue.

All "Awareness" appears to have done is to paint bullseyes on any particular liberal issue du jour.

[–] codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

Yeah, it turns out that being aware that the 1% in charge are all fucked up evil monsters hasn't done much to stop them, especially when ~30% of the total population supports them (however "aware" they are).

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago

I'm for just killing everyone at this point, not like I'm going to live long either anyway.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 8 points 2 days ago

People in charge don't care that people kill themselves because they are rich.

[–] justlemmyin@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Companies these days after making record profits.....

We are going to have to fire half of our workers and the rest will need to pick up more work.

We are also providing a third party free mental health service for anyone going through difficult times.

[–] Heikki2@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I tried better help for a while. $300/month was alot to afford.

[–] El_guapazo@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Texas banned teachers from using preferred names and pronouns; and we teachers got the suicide training update.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 16 points 2 days ago

Suicide is a negative externality of this regime. They don't give two fucks if plebs suicide themselves.

It is like homeless... Get blamed on mental issues but discussion never goes further...

Why are so many peasants got all these mental illness?!

[–] josefo@leminal.space 5 points 2 days ago

We need a black book of capitalism accounting for this shit
