Anyone watching the new foundation series? Thought I’d post a thread for the most recent episode to see if there’s any interest.

Edit: Any book readers please put those comments with spoiler tags!

Might want to provide some discussion guidance for book readers.

Otherwise, I thought the episode was pretty good. Definitely not as good as last episode.

Otherwise, as a book reader, I'm starting to grow a little suspicious that

spoilerUnlike the books, magnifico is not the mule. The mule is simply too capable alone. Though it's still not out of the realm of possibility entirely.

Good idea! I’ve edited my post. How have you felt so far about the changes the show has made?

I’ve generally seen people like the genetic dynasty plotline but other than that it’s been a very long time since I read the first 2 books so it’s hard for me to remember all the differences.

Tap for spoilerAlso I agree I think the show is going to leave that twist out since “the mule” has been a bit too strong my himself but we’ll see if they explain that somehow and still do the twist.

I too appreciate the genetic dynasty story. In the original trilogy the various Emperors were featured so rarely and depicted as utterly incompetent. I think the TV adaptation does a much better job of creating a more compelling and nuanced story for the empire. Not to mention - Lee Pace and others do such an excellent job of playing these various "versions" of themselves.

As an aside, I wonder if

spoilerWe'll get a mention of Dors Venabili as an explanation of why Seldon knew Demerzel was a robot.

I also wonder how or if

spoilerDemerzel transitions to R. Daneel Olivaw in time for Season 5. Or if Olivaw is made into a separate entity for the TV adaptation.

spoilerI know that to align with the books, Vault Seldon had to be clueless, but
I found it a bit unbelievable how Vault Seldon acts or has acted. He had the Prime Radiant, learned that it could be used to peek outside his vault, should have known that the future was 'off course' even after the second crisis, but he gave the Prime Radiant to the very person that was compelled by law to work against his plan? And because he gave the Prime Radiant away, he didn't know anything about the real third chrisis.

In season 2, Vault Seldon struck me as someone who realized that for his plan to work, it required more action and that he had the power to enact this action. In season 3 so far, he seems to blindly follow his 'programming'.

Yeah that part did feel inconsistent with how he had been portrayed before that.

I watched the first two seasons, and I’ll at least start this one, too, once they’ve all been released.

I read the books ~40 years ago. I wouldn’t re-read them now; I’ve had my fill of Burgerland’s anti-communist Golden Age. I still remember it, though, and I’m glad I read it.

The show deviates from the books in infuriating ways and also in interesting ways. Some of the acting is a’ight and production is so luscious—the enormous spectacle was what kept me from walking away several times. I’ve already abandoned any expectation of fidelity to the books.

What grinds my gears is mostly around the megalomaniacal bastards Seldon & Cyberseldon, and the portrayal of ~~historical materialism~~ psychohistory as mathmagical. In short, the good guys suck but the bad guys are fascinating.

I agree my biggest complaint of the show is that it takes like you said takes what is effectively historical materialism applied to predicting the future as an almost magical phenomenon.

I like enough of the rest and find it interesting that I’m still watching and hoping that after this part with the mule story it’s less like that.
