@LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone You're going to buy a new handle/latch set and replace it. It's super easy, and all of this stuff is standard, so you don't have to figure out "which one you need" really. The Philips screws there obviously have to come off. The little hole in the bottom of the handle conceals a screw that holds the handle on (both sides). That might be a Philips, might be an Allen.

The latch plate comes off, the handles come off. Behind the round trim pieces, there will be some more Philips screws that hold another bit in that has to come out. Once that's out, the latch will slide out the side of the door.

Installation is reverse of removal. Seriously, this is an easy and cheap fix, even if you have to buy a couple of tools, too. Everything you need will be at your local home improvement store.

So the first part I can answer - see that hole on the right under the handle?

There should be a little screw bit in there you can tighten or loosen using an alen key. It looks to be missing.

Odds are it just fell out (look on the floor nearby) - sometimes years of motion just does that.

As for the second part, no idea XD

I had this happen once, and it turned out to be the handle was screwed too tightly causing the latch part to stick.

Take the door off it's hinges and turn it upside down

That'll stop the handle from hanging down

If the latch is sticking you can try taking the handle off via the other posters instructions and lubricating the latch slide in the door with a graphited lock lube like https://www.agscompany.com/products/lock-ease-graphite-lubricant. If this doesn’t work replace the handle.

The latch (gold part that holds the door closed) looks stuck inside. It's caught on the bottom if you look closely. As a temporary fix you should just be able to nudge / wiggle it up with a butter knife or similar and hopefully it'll pop right out.

This looks very similar to your handle and pretty clearly shows the parts involved, so you’ll be able to figure out what’s failing with yours. He offers a few different solutions.

As someone else said, this is seriously an easy project. The two screws you can see in the picture, loosen the set screw in the handle (the little hole on bottom). Pop the handle off, pop the solid metal ring off the door. That'll expose 2 more Phillips head screws. Take the handles out, the latch will slide out.

I literally did 8 of these this weekend. When buying a new knob, you can get knob, handle, locking, or not locking. Any version should fit

Only tools needed are a phillips head screw driver, and probably an alen key set for that set screw. Both cheap tools that are great to have. Might need a flat screw driver to help pop off those metal rings at the handle base
