Woah...an actually heartwarming story that wasn't just a forced positive spin on people coping with the orphan crushing machine!

Color me surprised 🙀

obviously the back story is that the guy is in the hospital because he was beaten to a life altering degree during a consensual encounter with police after legally walking away because he was not being detained

I'd argue this is more c/orphancrushingmachine but okay...

My understanding is that orphan crushing machine is for highlighting systemic issues. This just sounds like the guy didn’t have family to take care of the dog and had to give it up because he was sick for a long time.

People not having that level of support in their lives could be considered a systemic issue imo. There's also how a wealthy person could have paid for their dog to be looked after for an extended period instead of giving it up.

I would think that would be more if he couldn’t afford to keep the dog because of the stay? This sounds more like he hadn’t been able to find someone to look after the dog while he would be gone. I’m assuming the nurse only learned about his plight after he’d already turned the dog in, otherwise I’d think they’d try to avoid having a shelter involved.

I think you may be misunderstanding the "man was forced" part. Its not like the hospital said "give up your dog or you won't get surgery". THAT would be orphancrushingmachine material.

Here it is meaning paraphrased "man needing lengthy hospital stay has no one to care for his dog. To make sure the dog is cared for, the man gave it up for adoption".

It's nice to read something heartwarming from the US for a change.

Just a heads up that your local humane society sometimes has a foster program for situations like this (or likely knows of a foster program in your area).

Sadly it's very common for HS to have shoestring budgets that can not accommodate high populations. Once space becomes scarce it's very much realistic that animals with health conditions be euthanized rather quickly. Which is terrifying for an owner in a position like this, who's in no place to care for his dog. Not to mention the potential the dog is adopted by another person.

It should go without saying this is rarely the fault of your local HS. You can blame shit dick breeders who constantly dump unhealthy or unwanted overstock whenever it suits them.

Remember, there's no such thing as a purebred.

Fuck breeders

yeah, my cats are gorgeous. if we had to give them up, we'd never see them again.

Right! I was looking for a brief distraction from an awkward work moment. Not a mix of sadness and wholesomeness
