March 4, 2006 for me. Looks like a lot of us signed up around the same time. If memory serves, wouldn't that have been about the time that YouTube first got absorbed by Google?
Showerthoughts
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
Maybe that's when they also added the ability to subscribe to channels, making it actually useful to have an account if you weren't uploading videos ?
Idk, just spitballing, my own account is from 2009, because in 2006 my parents definitely didn't have a broadband subscription, and Dailymotion was kinda superior to YouTube for a short time, so that's where I usually went for a while.
Most people who use YouTube are over 19 years old.
I have just received the relevant stats and indeed, I'm not but it sure feels like it these days. It's more childlike in content than it's every been IMO. Maybe it's just me.
I changed my Google account in 2011 so ended up with a newer account. Womp womp.
I'm old enough to remember when YouTube was a separate account from your Google login.
My accounts currently from 2011. I've used it a bit longer, that would've been around 18 for me and I've been using it since at least 14/15. I started with Google video I think.
Mine is may 2009, but I had one for years before that. 2009 is just when my YouTube and google accounts merged

In amongst then pack, it seems
The absolute first video I saw on YouTube was the evolution of dance... which was one of the first ever viral videos ever...
I noticed the last modified date on some of my mp3s recently and realized almost all of them are old enough to drink and some are nearly 30 years old :(
12th of December 2006 here.
You made me check mine, can't believe i'm there in 2008.
