I think it would help if the American police would hire more on a "high IQ" base instead of "can shoot".

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 46 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I do have some sympathy for this guy, sounds like the cop was being a dickhead.

However I caught this point in the article:

Many municipalities are cracking down on volume, which is justified to some extent, but then arguably goes too far when stock vehicles are being cited as nuisances

Yeah, about that… cars are almost all so obnoxiously loud at all times.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Why does something being "stock" excuse it from nuisance laws? Fucking 8 billion lumen headlights, ridiculous exhausts, completely unnecessarily large vehicles, and blasting stereos are the bane of my commute and work day. And people have them for no other reason than because.

And putting any sort of sound kit on an ev should be a crime. Fucking safety!? Really?

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world -4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I have adjustable exhaust vents. I set it to quiet start 20hrs out of the day. It will only turn on loudly between 1pm-5pm. Before and after are quiet starts. My neighbors appreciate it.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 8 points 6 days ago (2 children)

You're being a dick only in the afternoon? That's so kind of you.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago

You live on your computer. Go take a break and touch some grass.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Awwwwww. Is your butt hurt? Do you need some preparation H?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I see you also have a 'dick' setting for you online comments. How many hours per day is that on?

Read this: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jun/24/noise-pollution-harms-health-of-millions-across-europe-report-finds

You're hurting people for fun because you're ignorant or just plain asshole. Saying "I only do it couple hours a day" is the dumbest excuse I've seen so far.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

My neighbors are all in love with my car. They are all muscle car people. You don’t even know what you’re talking about clown. Making assumptions makes you an ass. And I usually am not home at those hours. So me starting up does nothing to their peace. Go touch grass.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Ok, if all your neighbors are also assholes I guess it's fine, sorry. You're all simply hurting others with your muscle cars. What a fun neighborhood that has to be! Do you also enjoy rolling coal? Only in the afternoons of course.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

Also. We don’t do burn outs. We don’t damage the roads in our neighborhoods and we go to tracks for that stuff. You assumed so much. You just proved you are angry at an imagination you made up in your head. Pathetic. Get a grip.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Lololol. My neighbors are ex-NHRA racers, owners and mechanics. They have old F-1 Ford trucks or K-1’s. They have corvettes outside their homes and we all talk shop. You are just a shut in. That has clearly no life outside of the internet.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So your "cool racer car" friends don't have laud cars? You're the only one? I guess you're the only cringe guy in the neighborhood than haha. Respect for your more considerate neighbors. You still sound like a dick.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Across the court. There’s a dude with a house of 3-4 other dudes. They have motorcycles. They are loud but no one cares because it’s just a normal thing in our neighborhood. The direct neighbor to me has friends with old school hot rods that come over to hang out often. And then there are my other neighbors to the left with trucks and ATV’s. They go wild sometimes doing figure 8’s on the Atc’s. But again. None of us complain because it’s not at all hours of the night. My one neighbor has an old dodge dart that he goes under bridges and does burn outs. But far away from any homes. So he doesn’t bother people.

I never rev my engine or do burn outs. The car simply turns on and I have a V8. So it is inevitably louder than a 4 cylinder. But I can make it as quiet with settings to the decibel level of a civic. So that’s what I do.

The car naturally rumbles. I set it to quiet start for most the day because I’m not a fan of loud obnoxious exhausts. Which this is not. It’s able to take the four pipes in the back and turn it into 2 only. You can when tracking the car. Set it to fully open. But if you drive around town like that. You will get ticketed and the car unregistered if it gets hit for checks by the police. When you change the settings the car warns you that it’s track use only. Which only use it on.

I don’t do burn outs because my tires are 400$ a pop. I ain’t rubbing any of that rubber off. And the car even has a burn out mode if I wanted to do it. Butttttttttt I don’t.

I’m on my eBike most of the time anyways.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

If it’s stock, the blame should be on the manufacturer. Instead of punishing the consumer, where’s the recall?

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Agreed.

I get the logic that it’s not the fault of the person who bought the car, but cars like that should not be legal to sell.

[–] toeblast96@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

god whenever im walking down the street and theres no cars for even just 5 seconds, the absolute silence is Amazing

[–] drkt@scribe.disroot.org 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Unbelievably funny of the article and completely oblivious to make a point about how it's ELECTRIC AND CAN'T MAKE NOISE U DUMMY COP PERSON but later explain that actually it can definitely make a lot of fucking noise, it was just turned off trust me bro

[–] evasive_chimpanzee@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I doubt that the stock noises put out through external speakers are going to be near as loud as some yahoo gunning a combustion engine.

[–] drkt@scribe.disroot.org 25 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I love how the article makes out this sound system to be some sort of engineering marvel.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

“We put a speaker in a tube. You know, like a bullhorn!”

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh good lord, this has to be the dumbest thing I've read all day today.

They could have easily just pumped out sound inside and put some N64 rumble packs under the driver seat to satisfy the ridiculous need for their "I have size insecurity" issues. But instead they pushed it out to annoy everyone else just so they can hear it in their electric car.

So absolutely stupid.

[–] Unpeeled3828@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Or do no type of sound shaping and have the driver make car noises if they like.

[–] SirMaple__@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Good lord. One of the main things about EVs that I like is how quiet they are. They could put a noise maker on them for safety reason no problem, but the one on the Charger is way too loud.

Reminds me of those stupid kits you can get online to make your plain old bike or ebike sound like a motocycle. So stupid.

[–] hanrahan@piefed.social 1 points 4 days ago

Under 40km/hr, a small noise makes sense, over that the tyres make enough noise

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Ts not just how quiet EVs are, but the combination of massive torque and silence makes acceleration seem effortless. My car will pull away from almost any other car I encounter, just taking it easy, while they wheeze and rattle and whine and struggle to get up to speed.

I recently had to drive a gasoline car and it was sad how much effort it seemed to be putting into some minor acceleration. I’m starting to think of these vehicles similarly to steam engines or steampunk creations. It’s fascinating how they achieved such complexity back then, all those gears and clanging metal parts, and they’re well suited for a museum

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The Charger EV can “rev” quite loudly, but it has to be put in Park to do that. It can also produce a fake engine noise while moving, but it must be in Sport mode for that. Mike told us he had his car set to the Auto drive mode at the time because he was low on battery, and that setting keeps the synthesized sounds to a minimum.

Of course he's going to say that. ACAB but in this case if the cop claims the car was loud that's all that is needed. You can always put some switch in your car to "change settings to quite" and claim it was on. It's not for the cop to prove when it was on or off. The car shouldn't be able to make loud noises at any point. If you have this setting then fuck you.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

"Acab, but I immediately believe what the cop said with no evidence, even as he tickets someone for a loud muffler that the car literally doesnt have and openly fishes for other violations to try to justify the stop."

[–] Tarquinn2049@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Just cuz they don't have a new offense name yet for the fratzonic fake super loud exhaust replicator system, doesn't mean people shouldn't get in trouble for doing the same dumb stuff they would with a "real" loud exhaust system.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I get your point, but ACAB means that you don't just take cops word for things, because they are bastards. They lie and cheat and kill with impunity. If the cop has dashcam or badge cam video of the loud "muffler," then ticket away.

Sure doesn't seem the cop has proof, especially when they go fishing for more offenses after the stop. The latter is common cop behavior when they can't pin their initial issue on you. They try to retroactively justify their bullshit, to get you for something to prove you're the "bad guy."

Since the cop cant prove the noise violation, he finds several other "provable" violations like window tint or an air freshener or whatever. This adds weight to his initial, unprovable allegation, but that doesn't actually make it true. Cops fervently hunting for penny ante "gotchas" after the fact makes the whole thing suspect.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

That is an unfortunate point. Historically the cop could prove loud noicpse because you had to modify your exhaust system, but this is just a speaker that could be on or off, with no clear proof.

I still say that DA should be pursuing action against the manufacturer that such a feature exists

[–] Oni_eyes@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I thought it was "innocent until PROVEN guilty". Cop has to prove the setting was off, or that the noise was real. Putting the onus on the defendant means guilty until proven innocent.

[–] roguetrick@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Your reasonable doubt is that whoever is testifying it was on is committing perjury against a stranger for laughs vs the guy who actually bought a car with a noisemaker. I frankly don't care if the depondent is a cop or some 7/11 cashier, that sort of he said she said with circumstantial evidence of possession of an actual noisemaker is the proof.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago

It can also produce a fake engine noise while moving

That is just so sad. It's the equivalent of a 5yo kid putting this cardboard piece against the spikes so that when the wheel turns it makes this "flapflapflap" noise to look cool

It's the "look, I can STILL be an obnoxious asshole!" mode
