When they are underground, they are unimpeded by the righteous gaze of freedom. Only the sweet sound of democratic detonations restores their normal unburrowed state.

It's not just good old burrowing, it's unjust evil and fascist burrowing. That makes it faster, and undemocratic.
It's simple geometry.
The shortest distance between 2 points (that aren't quantumly entangled) is a straight line. The bugs can avoid having to traverse the curvature of the planet by burrowing straight in to your ass.
Geology would suggest that the composition of the material they are burrowing through could create a problem though.
But the Terminids seem to dig through all materials at the same speed. Sand, dirt and solid rock.
They are also able to burrow underwater :/
i wonder if we can get some non "rp" discussion about the state of the game at any point. i wish players in game were as committed to rp as any of the people in the forums responding to literally every valid complaint with some variation on the theme of democracy. like, it's fun in the game to pretend you dont live in a fascist state and all your decisions are morally uncomplicated, but i want the game to actually improve, and just regurgitating tepid meagre lore (which even in-universe is just brainwashing) every time the game ships yet another half-baked update... it's absurd and I can't distinguish people saying shit like "fascists burrow fast underground because freedom can't watch them" from bot astroturfing.
bugs burrowing faster than they walk (or at such a speed that it's hard to compare) is incredibly jarring and unrealistic. dragonroaches wiggling around in the air while you clip them with your mech is evidence of poor design. failing missions multiple times because your nuke drill is bugged and calldowns can't reach the nuke drill site means the mission didn't get tested well enough. hope you didn't start a mobile extractor before taking out the worm or you already failed the mission (did I mention the worm has 150k hp under its armor and is hypersexually attracted to your emplacements?). landing on a roof should not be a death sentence, and if it is, you should not be forced to land on a roof, and then when you respawn you should not be spawned in that same spot again. call me crazy, i don't think blindness is a difficulty modifier. i don't think enemies being invincible until they're unburrowed (unless you want to waste your grenades forcing 1 or 2 burrowers to the surface at a time. good luck keeping up with that.) is good balance. dont get me started on a 2 ton vehicle that flips around end over end like a tissue in a tornado for the slightest bumps while mechs which should be topheavy are literally unflippable. physics doing wacky ridiculous impossible bullshit constantly is part of the charm but christ forbid we leave the dropship and kill a few more bugs after the mission is over, wouldn't want to spoil anyone's sense of ImMeRsIoN
