Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

I wish I was replaying Bloodborne, but no longer have a PS4. Gonna play Dark Souls 2 instead, though I'm lost af in Drangleic Castle.

Is your PC good enough for emulation? You could try playing Bloodborne on PC if it is. Peak Souls 2 is the next best thing tho 8-)

[–] WeevilFriend@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is emulating PS4 on PC a very functional thing right now?

[–] villainy@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bloodborne specifically has been driving PS4 emulator development and works very well now. Other games will be hit or miss.

ShadPS4 keeps their compatibility listings as GitHub issues if you're interested

Here's a handy guide a user was kind enough to post here if you're interested: https://lemmy.zip/post/31585678

I'm bad at compiling it to work on my Linux Mint. Tried once and got some arcane errors, then gave up.

Check out DODI repacks, I have downloaded several games from there that when installed through Lutris seem to just work with no issues or messing around. I saw they have Bloodborne on there, but I have it on PS4 still if I ever feel like playing it again.

I've gotten Expedition 33, FF7 remake, and most recently DS2 from there and they all run just fine on lutris.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

I'm playing Hollow Knight

I'm STUCK in the fucking White Palace

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

Just woke my first dreamer! Nosk was a bitch, but I got lucky my last attempt.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I haven't even finished Hollow Knight. I also just... Don't really care that much for the 2D platformer genre. Love metroidvanias; just wish more were 3D. 🤷‍♂️

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So you're rather into the 3D Metroid games then? Which one is your favourite, if you do play them?

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Outside of souls games--which IDK how many people would consider to be the same even though they mostly are but you just get keys or triggers to open alternate areas instead of some kind of tool/power progression--the only true Metroidvania series in full 3D I can name off the top of my head is Metroid Prime.

Check out Pseudoregalia if you haven't already

Like my man brillotti I am diving into Dark Souls 2! Got myself a pimp ass broken sword and some sort of emerald maiden by my side!

[–] cannon_annon88@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey, I just started that one too! I have died so many times already, but it's been a while since I last played a souls game so I'm giving myself a pass while I shake off the rust.

[–] anistorian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Also the game is basically a completely different game with some superficial similarities. At least that is my excuse for dying all the time :p

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Cause I'm trying to finish hollow Knight. Game ain't Metroid dread, shit is taking some time.

I saw someone is literally porting Morrowind into Elden Ring all because, in their words, "it was easier than modding in Elden Ring's combat to Morrowind." 🤣

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 2 points 1 week ago

It took me a significant amount of time of watching that video to process that the title was completely accurate and not clickbait

Not playing Silksong because I'm still working on HK, which is what I've been playing again lately after a long break. Game is frustrating af just trying to get from bench to bench and explore. Not sure if I'm in the wrong area or just bad, but it's taking me several attempts to traverse any area and it's sooo faaar between checkpoints. I just unlocked the wall jump so that's helping, but it is really testing my patience and I hate feeling stuck repeating the same area. Imo HK has been more difficult so far than any souls game.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That sounds rough and about the same as when I went through the game the first time around. You got the wall jump so you've been to the mantis village. Did you go to the left after the Mantis Lords or where are exactly are you headed to?

The thing is, as much as I hate this mentality, you kinda need to "git gud" at the game to some extent to not sink into despair since you can't upgrade your stats. Charms and nail upgrades only help so much, so the toughest part is just getting the hang of the movement and combat. Traversing the environment and mapping out where you need to go was also kinda frustrating at times because you get lost constantly. No shame in looking up for pointers though imo

I'm not sure where to go. An NPC mentioned a "nearby" village where I can get nail upgrades so I'm looking for that I guess. No idea what other objective I should be looking for though.

Besides getting lost I'm just dying to enemies that I don't notice until they hit me lol. And thorns and water and stuff. Might have to bite the bullet and look at the wiki. I can only take so much punishment for exploring when I'm not sure if I'm going the right way. I just want to get to some boss fights already.

None, because I can't stand anything and everything that takes place in a fantasy setting. If wizards, witchcraft, spells, dragons, demons, vampires, werewolves, and/or castles are involved, I'm not interested

LotR is the one and only exception I make. It's just that good.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Would you play a soulslike set in the LOTR universe? Maybe using Talion from the Shadow of Mordor/War series would work well for that since he's kinda sorta immortal and keeps being revived

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

How about something like the The Surge 1&2? I haven't played either, but I think they're set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic world of sorts? Not sure it's exactly sci-fi but something along those lines

[–] froufox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

I am playing Silksong :3 And it meets all my expectations

[–] curiousaur@reddthat.com 2 points 1 week ago

I'm still on my first elden ring playthrough. Got in really late but loving it.
