I joined just a few hours back, I really hope this place grows. Reddit never felt like a good place for discourse and organising

Love your username

Just joined, hope to see this site grow and flourish given this tragic news. I mean beyond memes and shitposts, r/TheDeprogram had a real culture to it. And now, so much fun content, interesting discussions, resources, etc, are all gone thx to reddit ffs.

[–] ibrahimtuna12@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 1 day ago

Absolutely. It is very sad to see it go for a white supremacist POS.

[–] WilliamA@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 day ago (3 children)

As much as it sucks, this is actually a good thing. Instead of using a capitalist for-profit company that sells your data, now you're a part of a community of radical MLs in a platform where no one is selling your data. I also advise slowly switching to more platforms/operating systems like this one where the user is the top priority instead of money. For starting out, I advise checking out fsf.org. Next, you can slowly move on towards a more liberated life, not just digitally, but also physically. Free from the constant surveillance, the profit motive, and greedy corporations. Welcome to lemmy!

[–] CriticalResist8@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 1 day ago

Lemmygrad is a lot like forums of the 2000s that people started for free just for the love of the game. I owned quite a few of those back in the day lol. But with modern amenities; the reddit-style comments and posts imo is much better experience than the old phpbb threads that took up the entire space and were displayed from oldest to newest.

maybe I should make a lemmy theme that brings back this 2000s design style.

[–] Live_Teaching3699@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Very true. I'll take a look at fsf, anything on there I should know about or check out first? Anyway, I already use firefox browser and ublock origin, and have ad-free apks on my phone, and for music I use the VLC app with mp3s I download with programs like yt-dlp. I've considered switching to Linux, but it seems kinda redundant unless ur a full-on programmer. I also use mainly pirated websites to watch and/or download movies and shows cuz fuck having 10 thousand $20 a month subscriptions lol. I was just wondering tho, is there a plugin or extension I can install to make lemmygrad look more like the "new reddit" layout? With like bigger pictures and titles, etc. I kinda find that style more appealing tbh.

Throughout this post, by free, I mean free as in freedom. For more information check out fsf.org

"anything on there I should know about or check out first?" I meant to send you the link of gnu.org mb, but fsf is also a good recourse for more modern happenings. I encourage subscribing to their mailing list as well as gnu.org's. https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.en.html

"Anyway, I already use firefox browser and ublock origin, and have ad-free apks on my phone, and for music I use the VLC app with mp3s I download with programs like yt-dlp." Firefox isn't really a free browser in the sense of freedom, but for now, it's alright in the sense better than something like google just make sure to not stick to it. Also, you might now this, but the fact you mentioned ublock origin and ad-free apk makes me feel like you don't. Ad-free =! private.

"I’ve considered switching to Linux, but it seems kinda redundant unless ur a full-on programmer." It's GNU+Linux . Jokes aside, it's really not at all. There are different GNU+Linux distros, so while something like gentoo will be considered hard, something like debian has a very easy process of downloading it on a flash drive, flashing it, proceeding through a very simple gui start up, and there you go.

"I also use mainly pirated websites to watch and/or download movies and shows cuz fuck having 10 thousand $20 a month subscriptions lol." Have you tried torrenting? It's also very easy to do with a free torrenting software. Plus, you can actually give back to the people by seeding. The benefits are amazing in my opinion.

"I was just wondering tho, is there a plugin or extension I can install to make lemmygrad look more like the “new reddit” layout? With like bigger pictures and titles, etc. I kinda find that style more appealing tbh." You can customize in settings.

Thanks a lot for this. I've saved this comment as a resource to come back to later. Though from your reply I feel maybe you overestimate how experienced or knowledgable I am with this sort of stuff haha 😅. Any research I've done regarding this has come purely out of frustration at brands shoving ads down my throat and inconveniencing me in general. Or piracy. It's not as though this stuff isn't cool or interesting, I'm kind of just more motivated more by resolving inconvenience than a massive passion for software and programming. But what you mentioned sounds pretty cool and if I don't find it too difficult I think I'll try out a lot of what you mentioned. Also I understand the logic to decouple yourself from brands hoarding your data and tracking your activity, it is certainly a valid concern these days.

I meant to send you the link of gnu.org mb

Looking at the website this sounds really interesting, and I'll definitely look into it more. It says this is separate from linux, I assume it's similar? I've never properly used linux before as an OS, I've used WSL a few times running programs for downloading movies or anime or whatever, but I still needed to look up commands and follow directions from the github page. Like I was saying before I'm still very new regarding all this.

Firefox isn't really a free browser in the sense of freedom

Well I know there's tor browser and duckduckgo, I hear those are the most private and secure, but idk. I found tor was pretty slow for me and duckduckgo doesn't have the same amenities google does (though maybe that's changed nowadays, google has certainly gotten worse, but back in the day that was my main reason for not using it).

Ad-free =! private

I assumed so, I'm just not very knowledgable on which programs are better or worse regarding privacy. I use these because I just wanted to get rid of ads and those were the easiest and most popular options. Also it's hard to know what to trust in terms of downloading programs, like one that's popular is at least trustworthy enough that heaps of others downloaded it and survived lol.

so while something like gentoo will be considered hard, something like debian has a very easy process of downloading it on a flash drive

Yeah I think I used unbuntu or debain on WSL.

Have you tried torrenting?

No, I know a little about it but I usually just want to watch something without downloading it yk. So streaming it from some shitty soap2day clone or whatever is just a lot easier than going through a whole process. I know it's irresponsible, but ublock blocks pretty much all of the malicious elements of those sites anyway, and will warn you before visiting anything potentially dangerous. And I have it set to always ask me before downloading smth, so on the off chance one of these sites tries to download some bullshit I'll be able to stop it beforehand.

You can customize in settings.

I started using blorpblorp.xyz frontend, someone else told me that it's not open source, but the layout/UI is so attractive like it's basically exactly the same as the "new reddit" layout. And if blorp turned out to be keeping my lemmygrad account details it's like a dumb reddit username and an auto-generated password so I doubt it would be very useful to them.

Anyway thanks again!

The easiest way to identify software is through its license, so I would advise to learn that. For learning that and everything free software check out the book "Free software: free society. Selected essays by Richard Stallman" For browsers tor is considered free duck duck go no + controversy. Linux is a part of the os called the kernel GNU is everything else. Happy to help

Hi comrades! Fuck Reddit, fuck Charlie Kirk, and free Palestine!

[–] UntitledTankie@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] CriticalResist8@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 day ago

This is the dflp which you can recognize by the two lines of text on their headband. the pflp only has one.

[–] Slaytina666@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 1 day ago

Oh thank god we are allowed to say what we really feel about Palestine over here. FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA PALESTINE WILL BE FREE. FUCK ISRAEL.

Since there are many new users here who listen to The Deprogram, it would be cool if someone could donate a premium feed link to jumble.top or piratefeeds to share the slop with your comrades.

Yep, Reddit used to be the place to get the most recent info and stuff but it’s gone to shit now. The audience is bleh

[–] ClaudeCloud@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 day ago

Greetings comrades.

[–] Gobbo_the_Goblin@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I needed a push to get away from Reddit anyway.

[–] Cowbee@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Lemmy tends to be less addictive, IMO! In a good way.

I don't really have anything to add but I got permabanned like six months ago for saying that a certain group of people killing hundreds of thousands of people in a certain watermelon country was bad.

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 day ago

It got brigaded by 4chan

[–] Tsskyx@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is it true that 4chan is organizing to mass-report leftist subs? Someone claimed so and linked to a post with the evidence, but it's been deleted by a mod.

[–] ComradeObToTheR@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Worst case scenario is they push more people onto platforms like this that value privacy and free speech.

[–] Bratsummer1917@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 day ago

Absolutely. I'm not gonna be sorry for celebrating a nazi getting popped. If that means your community gets banned from the platform, then it wasn't worth fostering one there in the first place.
