Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, said on Thursday that he intended to apologize for comments he made in 2020 calling the New York Police Department “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.”

He said that the remarks, which he wrote in June 2020 in a social media post in support of the defund the police movement, were made after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis a month earlier.

The comments were made “at the height of frustration,” he said in an interview with The New York Times, and were not reflective of his current campaign or “my view of public safety and the fact that police will be critical partners in delivering public safety.”

I don't know why he didn't create a separate Twitter account and set his old account to private when he launched his campaign. Would've saved him a lot of headaches.

“You want to say the policies are racist or the policies are transphobic, that’s one thing. But not the membership,” [Lt. Turco] said

Are they asking to be called out individually? Because I'm certain that the community could (probably has) list racist and transphobic offenses by individual officers. Maybe adding up to the majority of the force.

He's going to have to work with them after he becomes mayor, whether he likes it or not. Prematurely making extra enemies is not very forward-thinking, he has enough as it is.

Is he going to have to work with them or is he going to reform them?l

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Probably both, it's not an either/or. He's working within a pluralistic society though, he won't have dictatorial power. He can't just decree the abolishment of the NYPD.

What is the point of him becoming mayor if he will not use his power to change the things that are currently wrong?

That was literally supposed to be the one thing he did. And he is not supposed to abolish the entire police. But change it so it would not be so racist and corrupt.

Again, it's not either/or. This statement of his does not indicate that he will keep everything the same. It just indicates he's proficient at playing politics in a system with multiple centers of power. I would call that kind of awareness of his situation a good sign for getting actually meaningful reform.

Yeah, this is the kind of cope we are used to from Liberals who never change anything.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sure, except changes are happening all the time, both in positive and negative directions. The world is a messy place, with a lot going on, on any given day. I do understand that it is very tempting to wish for simple solutions and to blame all of our problems on this or that ideology, but you can't escape humans acting like humans.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ok good luck with Andrew Cuomo.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Cute. But being liberal doesn't mean you have to love every member of your coalition. Just means you have to deal with people living in a free society.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And don't forget supporting genocide.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago (2 children)

No, you do not have to be far left to be against genocide or Israeli actions in Gaza. Remember, messy world, all liberals are not the same. Do you have anything of actual substance to add, or is generic lib-bashing about all we can expect from this conversation?

[–] bunnyBoy@pawb.social 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I honestly commend you for making it this far in the conversation without being snarky or mean, but you're probably gonna have a better time talking to someone else XD

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Eh, it's fine. Dealing with internet trolling helps me feel young. :p

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Just support the politicians supporting genocide.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No, that is also untrue. Liberalism is a belief in a free society. It does not mean I must agree with every member of my coalition. You need to look beyond tribal identities, though I do understand that individualism is also more of a liberal concept, so may be unusual for you.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Actual Liberalism invented the guillotine and beheaded the monarchy you might want to recheck your ideology.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

How is that relevant to anything exactly...?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Read back your own comments.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago

That does not really help. What does individuality and not always agreeing with other liberals have to do with monarchy and the guillotine?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh here we go with the leftist infighting...

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Very fitting that the local DNC advocate would say this.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone -2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Yeah that's what I am. Because nuance means I'm not pure enough for the left. I must be a "DNC advocate."

Go fuck yourself

The left has constantly sabotaged itself for the past 100 years, at least. I'm far from the first person to point this out.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Yeah that’s what I am.

That was unfair. You're the local netanyahu apologist.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Your reputation precedes you.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 5 days ago

Haha cool.

Anyone who honestly reads my comment history will be able to tell that I am not a fan of the Democrats.

I'm just not a fucking moron.
