What's with the AI hands?
It's not AI.
The artist, Nora Krug, was trying to make the hands resemble a rhinoceros.
Really the book should be viewed in it's entirety, but I thought this was poignant
Why are there 11 fingers?
Maybe one isn't visible, so we don't see the full and totally normal set of 12 fingers.

This is far too stylized for ai. Don't accuse without cause (an additional, proportional finger, isn't cause. People can make mistakes)
It may have also been intentional the section was talking about truth and post-truth after all.
The style of twisted fingers seems pretty consistent with AI generated images. The original picture didn't include the image of the rhinoceros, so asking what the twisted hand was all about is a reasonable way of engaging with OP.
