I really only have it on frieghter storage. Where storage 0 has the frieghter symbol with maroon text being fuel, then the backpack with light blue text for life support, the two ingot symbols with yellow text for materials and specials materials, white gear for crafting components, green for plants and food
Really makes flipping through inventories quickly easier since their color coded and the image is a nice touch

I’ve seen people do rainbow text for each letter. I honestly don’t have that kind of patience but I’m more curious how they don’t hit the character limit

I wasn't even sure what the "normal" cap was, I just assumed there was one and I've rarely had more than 4 or 5 ships on a save. With one or two scrapfodder slots.
The caps have increased several times.
You generally won't find out unless reading the release notes for every update... which is why it's great that players post these hints!
