Except that the hobbits would likely have been decimated by a very cold winter if it weren't for Gandalf

That story is told by an imperialist.

What is not told in that version is that later: there was less wealth, food and medicine in the shires. And people had to work more each day.

Eventually the humans killed off most the hobbits by disease, forced resettlement and genocide.

Today there are a few hobbit reservations on very arid land to the west of the shires. But they struggle with many problems
