Timely as ever.

They’d help their case more if anything they did accomplished something other than punishing responsible firearm owners

Being anti-gun consistently looses Democrats so damn much support. There is no reason Dems should be relegated to the cities; dropping this topic and giving gun owners a fig leaf in the form of dropping suppressors from the NFA would go a long way.

Though, that easy fig leaf of making hearing safety equipment more accessible may already be gone as the classist tax stamp for suppressors was just recently removed by Trump (nice win for gun owners there, particularly for poor individuals). Which, may result in this easy win for Democrats ultimately going to Republicans (depending on how ongoing litigation plays out wrt the NFA holding up as a $0 tax vs an illegal registry).

Tax stamp isn't gone, it's just free now. You still have to go through all the legal bullshit to own something that other very very strict countries require for hearing protection and noise pollution.

Dems will continue to shoot themselves in the foot on gun rights because they think that they can talk their way out of the fascism they've helped grow.

Wanna magically win? Drop gun control and tell the rural areas how you're going to help make them wealthy. Watch the votes roll in.

But we're talking to each other on this community...so I'm preaching to the choir.

I'd support mandatory safety courses and safe storage, but it would have to be on a shall issue basis.

mandatory safety courses

Put this in a life skills class in high school. Just a few class periods of gun safety, gun knowledge, and a practical using BB guns.

The life skills class can also teach filing taxes, credit card interest, mortgages, cooking basic meals, etc.

I question safe storage just because there are so many ways to make a gun useless because it is stored and not accessible when you need it.

When seconds count, one doesn't need to fucking around with a lock.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Ok but more children accidentally shoot themselves than there are home invasion self defense shootings.

[–] BombOmOm@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

That is better mitigated by gun safety classes in school. As this doesn't interfere with the right to defend yourself and simultaneously teaches gun safety/literacy to kids.

The kids are often quite young, are you gonna have these classes in kindergarten?

[–] BombOmOm@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

A basic gun safety class? Why not?

I got one when I was a kid. At that age it's 'don't touch the gun'.

When you get older it's how to touch a gun.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 1 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

As if "Don't touch that" works, you think the parents of these kids didn't do that?

As if "Don't touch that" works

I've literally seen children try to do something dangerous the second a parent looked away because they were told not to do something because it would really, really hurt them. Multiple times.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 hours ago

you think the parents of these kids didn't do that?

Yeah, there's a fair bit who don't

I wish they would try to be more inclusive by supporting policies that the majority of Americans want, stuff that would make their corporate donors unhappy

Today on no shit sherlock
