Okay, so as the title says, I'm looking for a very cheap android phone that can support LineageOS. I know this is a stretch, but my current phone isn't compatible. I'd also prefer a flip phone, but I'll take what I can get. I'm trying to not break the bank with a phone as I'm trying to save for a car (I'm about 1/6th of the way there for a beater). Any help at all is appreciated!

Also, can anyone recommend a desktop YouTube client since they decided JS was necessary to combat whatever the fuck?

Highly recommend the Motorola Moto G7 Power (Ocean). Get it OEM unlocked. Runs LineageOS and /e/OS.

Battery life lasts for days with minimal usage, and costs just about or is $100.

Can't recommend a phone but I had a great experience with swappa if you're in the US and open to something used. There's a couple flip phones listed.

Savin' that site for later! First I've heard of it

Just to save you some time, Lineage doesn't do flip phones. https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

used SDM845 or similar phone (Poco F1, Oneplus 6/6T, etc). it should be attainable in the $50-100 region. blazing fast, good features, you can get at the battery with some finagling and thus replace it, etc.

not only does it have support for lineageOS, practically every Linux (mobian, postmarket, ubuntu touch) supports it. get the 8 GB version. when you're done using it after a few years, it can be a great home server!

if you come up short, I'd suggest going to the lineageOS site, devices page, and filter for latest version (22.2 currently). that should give you all devices with current support. then you can see what you got available locally for cheap.

another resource to research brands and unlock options, the unlock wall of shame.

I recently bought a refurbished OnePlus 6 for €75 off EBay. LineageOS works like a dream.

Do you have to look for one that is OEM unlocked?

[–] elperronegro@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yes, make sure OEM unlocked. Most are

it's not a flip but I feel like the a used pixel6 or something may be the most straight forward w/ linage in that price rage

For YouTube Desktop App there Is FreeTube. It’s great!

Is it? I haven't been able to play a video for the last 4 days.

[–] pepperjacques@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I use Freetube, but it's broken with the last YT update

Thank you all for the recommendations! I've had a OnePlus in the past and liked it a good bit. The Moto and other recs are appreciated as well! I mostly use Moto, current phone is a Moto G Power 5G 2024, so it kinda sucks that it's not supported, but it is what it is. Not sure I could even root this thing if I wanted to since I got it from Cricket

Maybe a "moto g 5G 2024" using CalyxOS. I haven't used it but it's listed as supported on CalyxOS website.

They usually have great battery life but I assume you can find one for around $100

Note that calyxOS is currently halted, and instructions and downloads on their website are currently inaccessible.

As for YouTube theres alternative frontends like newpipe and invidious. Haven't used them myself though.

[–] pepperjacques@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

I use newpipe on my phone, but figured it was a mobile only project. I'll give it a look

Okey from personal experience don't get a oppo, realme, one+ . they are the same shit. You will regret buying one.
