According to the United States Code, which has a special section for commemorative coins: “No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President.”

It's clearly illegal and they can't issue it. This is Bessent's attempt at trying to suck Trump.

[–] BlueZen@lemmy.world 76 points 5 days ago (1 children)

it's clearly illegal and they can't issue it ... so, 100% they will mint it and be issuing it

[–] miss_demeanour@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's done, and it'll be in stores tomorrow!

Well, you know, Bessent could be calling for Trump's death, in order to be able to legally put his face on coins in two years during what would be Vance's acting term.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Um Ackshually, if Vance becomes President because Trump bites the big one (or resigns), then Vance becomes the actual, not acting, 48th President, for reals.

It's only if Vance becomes President due to the 25th Amendment that he gets to be "acting President".

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Thanks. "Unelected" would be better word to substitute for "Acting"

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Vice presidents are technically elected.

They originally were directly elected as presidents by the electoral college (which is a completely different problem we need to address), whoever was the runner up, became vice president. However, after the 12th amendment they are elected as vice president by the electoral college.

I think it would be interesting to allow voting for the vp separately on the ballot, but only if it’s popular vote, which should be happening for President as well.

Laws against things are just Trump's todo list

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's only illegal if Trump is alive when they do it. Maybe they know something we don't?

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

+2 years after death.

So they're running out of time to push that through this term

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 5 days ago

You seem to have mistaken dumpy for someone who respects laws. Big mistake.

Even the Nazis never put Hitler on a coin, and they were in power issuing 'reichsmarks' with swastikas on them for ~13 years, supposedly Hitler said he should not appear on coins until they had won the war.

So this is real 'glorious leader' energy akin to North Korea.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 19 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Fucking hell I’m in a world where Hitler was demonstrably less of an egomaniac than the president of the United States

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I am guessing it is because he actually participated in warfare with his own flesh. That sort of thing makes it clear what happens if things go badly. The likes of Trump never truly experienced the possibility of dying horribly.*

That is probably a good thing in our situation: however aggressive they may be, MAGATs are not hardened by suffering and mutual bloodshed. In a war, it will be easier to break their spirit. Unlike minorities, they haven't undergone genuine abuse. Be it black, autistic, or trans, the good guys knows what it means to lose to fascists, because they had to live with evil people who tried to strip away their humanity.

*That assassination attempt probably didn't really register. I have the impression that age has made Trump's brain into a soup that cannot learn.

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago

even north korean money doesn't have images of the currently living glorious leader on them

1776-2026... They plan the total collapse of the country next year?

[–] MrSmiley@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Under the Dark Enlightenment philosophy adopted by Trump’s financial backers, they do indeed plan the destruction of the US.

[–] Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 days ago

I'm guessing it's because of the 250th birthday celebration but the total collapse sounds very likely.

[–] ofespii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (5 children)

And I get banned for 3 days from Reddit for saying Trump is enslaving and breaking down America? That's crazy.

[–] Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip 10 points 4 days ago

I got a 6 day ban for saying "My grandpa got a medal for beating up Nazis" its what made me find this app.

Reddit is complicit

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Reddit admins are pedo apologists and Nazi sympathizers 🤗

Welcome to the saner side of the internet

[–] paperazzi@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I got permanently banned for commenting, "He should have spray painted a swastika instead" in response to a photo of a guy spray-painting USA on a presidential plaque. Apparently that comment was "inciting violence."

[–] Redditsux@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Welcome to Lemmy.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 22 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Can there be a clearer sign of the degeneration of the “full faith and credit” of the United States than embossing the currency with the likeness of a man who is famous for stiffing creditors and contractors for his entire career?

"How soon can you get these out to the public?"

"With some luck, should be able to start circulation in two years"

Fixed the design, it's more natural now.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Guess I'll need to get an engraver so I can add lil swastikas and Hitler mustaches.

[–] porksnort@slrpnk.net 5 points 5 days ago

That would be a nice thing to do. And beyond the cost of the engraver, it could be free almost. Just buy the coins modify them and uae them as part of your normal spending to get them back into circulation.

It worked for Where’s George. Coins don’t have serial numbers, though. There must be some way to put a unique identifier on each coin to gamify the fun

[–] echo@lemmy.tf 7 points 4 days ago

They can do this if he's dead, better get to work Bessent

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 20 points 5 days ago

My guess is that he's saying this to suck up to Trump, even though he knows he can't do it. And that Trump Inc will make "commemorative" coins and sell them at inflated prices to MAGA idiots who will believe they're real coins and try to spend them sometime in the future.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Well if trump dies within the next year then he can get all the commemorative coins and statues and memorials that he so badly wants. He just can’t visit them, physically…

[–] Capricorn_Geriatric@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

According to the United States Code, which has a special section for commemorative coins

Great! Just put him on a regular-issue coin. Problem solved!

</s>

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 11 points 5 days ago

In the Untied States, isn't the rule that you have to die before your face is on coins? So, is this a death threat against Trump?

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

OMG! Does Treasury Secretary Bessent know something is going happening to the president to allow the law, as it stands today, legally to put trump on a coin?! Shouldn't the Secret Service be talking to Bessent?

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

They are SO goddamn dumb. His supporters I mean.

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Looks like gold plated but knowing this grifter it'd be cheap yellow paint that'll flake off.

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Turn them into arrow heads and send them back

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President

we're still in time for a trump coin in 2027, though, and in this way it wouldn't need to have an engraving of a failed assassination on the back

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

I'm sure they'll be cheaply made so I could drill a hole in them and use them as washers. At least they'll be useful then.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Hail Caesar!

[–] plz1@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

So if he dies now, he could have his coin before Vance's term ends...

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Gonna be so much defacing of these things...

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

So are they expecting him to have a heart attack soon?
