World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
- Blogsites are treated in the same manner as social media sites. Medium, Blogger, Substack, etc. are not valid news links regardless of who is posting them. Yes, legitimate news sites use Blogging platforms, they also use Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube and we don't allow those links either.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

She's good people. We need more Gretas!
The eternal problem of activists: draw attention, but then direct it to your cause instead of your person. Not easy, especially for prominent ones and celebreties.
Remember, your elected officials are protecting and supporting a genocide entity that claims the right to a fictional kingdom.
Make sure when electing people to find those who are not planning to benefit the highest bidder.
What a strong, selfless person. We need more of this kind.
She is right! Please focus on the victims and the actual perpetrators - the Israeli government and their army. NOT random jewish people. It's so maddening to see fellow leftists get sucked into antisemitism because they can't hold two ideas in their head like "The genocide in Gaza is wrong." as well as "Genociding Israel would be wrong". We are better than this goddammit!
Nobody's calling to genocide israelis. I'm advocating for the end of Israel as a state and an agrarian reform.
They can stay if they pay rents lmao
The UK just had a high profile synagogue attack on Yom Kippur. Not defending Israel, but a lot of the diasporia are being victimized because of the war.
Victimised by who? The Islamic state is an Israeli puppet. They're friend with Syria now haven't you heard?
by other people
Violence against both jews and muslims increased but they want you to only care about opposing hate against only one side. The end of occupation is the only solution
Right absolutely nobody is calling for that.
https://feddit.org/comment/9270083
Also nobody is upvoting that either.
When you want to genocide genocide victims for a subset of them being genocidaires.
Irony, what irony?
Not irony, just stinking, old antisemitism.
Ah yeah I guess we genocided serbia when they killed bosniac.
Attacking a country that's committing genocide is the morale thing to do dumbass. Do you think we genocided Germans during ww2?
Did you glass Serbia or Germany, killing everyone? Chill out, your anger affects your reading comprehension apparently.
There's so, so many people out there who can't handle any shades of grey. They need the good people, the bad people and nobody else or in between.
And they've completely overwhelmed all discussion in the fediverse.
Thanks for mirroring my experience! It's so annoying and I know it's just a loud minority.
I'm blown away by these vote counts bc they represent my dozens of real life conversations, whereas Lemmy usually doesn't do that.
A lot of people come here for a circlejerk. I'd guess a nuanced take they can't argue with like OP's makes them click away.
What I have seen is the government saying it is antisemitic to judge their actions. Sadly some of the israeli population reacts the same.
That's always been their cover. Back 20+ years ago when I was protesting Israel's actions, I got called antisemitic so often, I finally stopped expressing opinions on it.
Yes what makes this different. Israel has been doing this kind of shit for decades and nobody cared. I guess it wasn't as public and they might be killing more publicly now.
Some of the worst Zionists aren't even Jewish.
We are better than this goddammit!
Clearly not.
We ~~are~~ should be better than this goddammit!
Here's that droopy defeatist again. Everyone else but sad-socks here: look past, and forward, we can succeed in making change!
Naive optimism isn't much better than defeatism. They're both deviations from objectivity.
Agreed, but (and I suppose this means Lemmy is smaller than I'd like) I've seen this dude posting similar "both sides", "we're doomed" etc etc etc shit.
Hope is always the last thing to die, but we've gotta be real and take action to fix things while it's still relatively easy to.
Eh the way the world has gone when I hear someone is religious any religion I now think their a piece of shit.
See I don't know if you are being purposefully obtuse or maybe you really don't know. The Jewish faith and the Jewish ethnic group are two things that don't have to overlap.
I've gotten the sense there's legitimately people who don't know this.
The best of us in the hands of the worst of us.
I wish I had the guts and the connections to do brave shit like this
You don't have to do shit that gets on national news to make a difference. Just being brave enough to go outside is the only requirement to help. Part of the reason Greta and others did this is so YOU take action how you can as well.
You don't have to be brave beyond going outside if you can't be. You can come join us at the next protest, vigil, sit-in, or even just learn more on a virtual meetup.
There are countless organizations but if you're in the US the easiest way to find out about events in general will be find your local PSL or DSA on Instagram (yeah I hate Instagram too but it is what it is). They aren't always the groups organizing activism but, in general, they will be promoting the events and that can help you find more specific groups in your area.
Outside of the US I can't be as helpful though.
Just be aware of where the money you spend is going. Your power is as a consumer...so stop supporting companies, and nations, that oppose your worldview. It works.
Let’s see how many people show up for Greta
