“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others."

[–] IzzyScissor@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

Matthew 6:5 I like having a sign with just the verse on it at any public 'christian' event. I refuse to say which verse it is, but encourage them to look it up. Usually under the guise of, "I can't remember the exact wording / I don't want to misquote Jesus, so it's more impactful if you read it for yourself. You have your bible on you, right?"

The looks on people's faces when they think you're on their side, but then read an insult directly from their god... Priceless.

Public praying? Boring and disgusting. If the king is so inclined to resurrect some ancient traditions, why not revive gladiator fights?

[–] Solumbran@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why not revive the guillotine

[–] Wrufieotnak@feddit.org 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Too French for the British

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Actually, the British beat the French to it. The Halifax Gibbet pre-dates the guillotine by about 100 years.

Yet another case where another nation somehow becomes better at a sport the British invented.

The southern English are trapped between a rock and a hard place with the whole thing. They do like the idea of stealing culture from the French, but they want to appear to be separate at the same time. And appearing northern would be even worse.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 19 hours ago

The French industrialised it.

That's barbaric, throwing rotten produce at criminals in a pillory would be fun though

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 3 points 1 day ago

Tomato red on an orange backdrop would look great!

[–] ruekk@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

So is being a pedo, he brought this on himself

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

You talking about Charles or pedos in general?

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean.

I really don't think you'd even need to do slavery to do it this time.

Are you honestly telling me that in this day and age you couldn't find people willing to fight to the death for fame and glory?

If someone wants to do it voluntarily then why the fuck not? Bring back gladiators! Vae victus

[–] Lembot_0004@discuss.online 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

for fame and glory?

Just pay them for a change, goddammit! Don't be so cheap!

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sorry if I was unclear, they'd definitely compete for large amounts of money, too.

[–] cecilkorik@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I mean don't we already have this? I thought it was called UFC. Granted they aren't allowed actual weapons yet, but given that they're having matches at Trump's White House I figure it's only a matter of time.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago

Well, they're not allowed weapons and they both always live as far as I know.

As long as the people are aware of and consent to the danger I say fuck it. Give them weapons and let them go for glory.

You think that when the Pope leads a prayer in front of a crowd of catholic worshippers that this constitutes the kind of "public praying" that is worthy of criticism? King Charles is the head of the Anglican church, so it's no different. They are leading a prayer together.

I'm not religious so I don't care either way, but to classify this as "disgusting" is to completely lack understanding of the context.

[–] Lembot_0004@discuss.online 3 points 1 day ago

is worthy of criticism?

Yes.

is to completely lack understanding of the context.

I do understand the context. In full. And find all these religious rites disgusting.

Wow this is a big step since that guy that wanted a divorce and wasn't granted it by the Pope decided to split from the Catholic church once upon a whenever.

I'm glad that the Catholic church got split then (lots of shady shit, they were directly taking donations to absolve sins ie. simony or indulgence payments) but this collaboration should not be relevant for most people.

No one sees an Anglican praying with a Catholic as a grand act of unity. Certainly not in the modern day.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Somehow my brain never put simony and indulgences in the same box. :) Thanks.

[–] krakenfury@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 22 hours ago

That was one whopper of a reformation!

[–] dwindling7373@feddit.it 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He's going to fake it and think of what he'll have for dinner instead.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 2 points 19 hours ago

Sadly not. Guy seems to be a real Christian, which kinda sucks balls.

[–] _deleted_@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Whoop de fucken doo.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

As American I say this is unacceptable! We should revolt!
