I expected him to look normal if I un-inverted him but somehow he looks worse.

Try inverting his hue only, not his brightness. You should end up with a relatively normal looking dude. I'll try that myself later and keep you updated

I tried extracting the color channel from the light channel then inverting the color channel before overlaying them.
