But why would they want to escape from the People's Paradise of Best Korea?

[-] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 16 points 10 months ago

According to Hexbear, it's actually the UN which is preventing North Koreans from leaving their country.

[-] Risk@feddit.uk 13 points 10 months ago

God I'm so glad I never see hexbears.

[-] GBU_28@lemm.ee 3 points 10 months ago

I feel like they're moving to .ml and I'll need to instance block that soon.

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Yea I’ve noticed too. After many defederated, they have multiple accounts to spread their shit

[-] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

They should all go live in North Korea and find out

[-] Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website 9 points 10 months ago

But they also don't want to leave because they know how the west just wants nothing more than to mill them.

And also anything that indicates NK is less than perfect means you're racist, colonialist, and white. And its not true. And it's the CIA doing a coverup/false flag.

If the brain were truly a muscle, theirs would be swollen from all the mental gymnastics needed to maintain their perceived moral high ground.. And every single one has that tinge of "surely the leopards wouldn't eat MY face..."

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

whenever I run into NK apologists I assume they're NK disinfo ops. It's really the only thing that makes sense.

[-] Transporter_Room_3@startrek.website 1 points 10 months ago

Edited: lmao tankies stay mad, call me racist all you want, your strawman arguments hold up just as well as the pig's house made of hay. If your only indication that I "think glorious leader feeds teenagers to dogs" is that I've criticized a famously oppressive regime, some of whose defectors I've personally conversed with, maybe your own argument isn't as strong as you think.

"Well ur white and in AmERiKa so obvs racist 10,000 gifs and emojis"

[-] Nobodywantstolearnanything@lemmy.world -1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Another quote from hexbear u might find useful

"But that's the strawman that people conjure up about Hexbear. We must all worship at the altar of Russia, China, Cuba and NK and they are literally infallible and can't possibly make a single bad move.

Thinking that we might have nuanced opinions on these countries, and critically analyse information to realise they're not the fucking otherworldly demons that western propaganda paints them as, takes brainpower they don't seem to spare."

Also, just my two cents here, but the "some of whose defectors i've personally conversed with" bit, doesn't rly mean much. Talking to people who are literally a minority of a minority of a minority, who often get called out by other defectors for making stuff up, such as Yeonmi Park, doesn't make you privy to some hidden knowledge. It just means your as gullible as every other person who buys their books and pays for their podcasts and merch.

Meanwhile, we see actually significant numbers of people in Amerikkka (ur spelling was incorrect) pointing out how bad life often is here, and the response from people like you is to go, "Well it could be worse, look at the DPRK!"
It just comes off as dishonest and lazy, and whenever somebody points it out, the response is hand wringing and excuses and baseless accusations that just look, to anyone actually paying attention, like projection.

[-] Nobodywantstolearnanything@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Quoted from hexbear in response to your comment

"No, you racist dog, nobody thinks the DPRK or any other country is perfect (cue Moleman), but if you think Kim Jong Un is feeding teenagers to starving dogs for wearing the wrong haircut you're definitely a racist and that's where like 95% of the west including everyone in that thread is at."

I know right? So stupid.

"Expands arms embargo and non-proliferation measures, including small arms and light weapons, catch-all provisions to ban any item if related to prohibited programmes, dual-use nuclear/missile items, and operational capabilities of DPRK’s and another Member States’ armed forces.

Enforces new cargo inspection and maritime procedures, including mandatory inspection on cargo destined to and originating from the DPRK; ban on DPRK chartering of vessels and aircraft; ban on operating DPRK vessels or using DPRK flags; ban on flights (of any plane) or port calls (of any vessel) if related to prohibited items, prohibited activities, and designated persons or entities.

Expands financial measures, including an assets freeze on Government of the DPRK and its Workers’ Party entities associated with prohibited programmes and activities; clarifies that assets freeze includes vessels; prohibits DPRK banks from opening new branches; requires States to close existing DPRK bank branches in their territories; prohibits Member States from opening branches in the DPRK; requires States to close existing offices in the DPRK if related to prohibited programmes or sanctions violations.

Enforces sectoral sanctions (coal, minerals and fuel ban) and prohibits its procurement and/or transfer by Member States. Adds new items to the luxury goods ban.

Clarifies ban on hosting of DPRK trainers, advisors or other officials for police, paramilitary and military training; Ban on specialized training or teaching for DPRK nationals in specific fields that could contribute to the DPRK’s proliferation-sensitive activities.

Requires Member States to expel DPRK diplomats and foreign nationals involved in illicit activities.

Designates additional 16 individuals and 12 entities.

OMM vessels are subject to the assets freeze. Of the 31 vessels listed in Annex III of resolution 2270 (2016), 4 were removed by the Committee by its decision of 21 March 2016 (Security Council press release SC/12296) and an additional 5 were removed by the Committee by its decision of 17 December 2016 (Security Council press release SC/12636."

Now back to ur echo chamber.

[-] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 5 points 10 months ago

Read the full text of the UN resolution. It specifically exclude prevents sending people back the your favorite dictatorship if it would cause humanitarian problems, which, well, it would do in 99.9% of cases, considering the DPRK (a dictatorship which is not communist) is a humanitarian crisis in and of itself.

Now back to your dictatorship-apologist echo chamber.

[-] Nobodywantstolearnanything@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

So why do they keep sending them back?

Is there supposed to be a slash between exclude and prevents? Because its a little annoying to try and understand what ur saying when its written like that.

I've been told more actually defect to them for the "greatest medical system in the world that has the cure to cancer"

As of May 15, 2023, a total of 5,315 US citizens have renounced their US citizenship in 2023. This is a significant increase from the 2,390 US citizens who renounced their citizenship in 2022.

The number of North Koreans who defected to South Korea tripled last year, as the easing of border closures imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic encouraged students, women and diplomats to make the perilous journey. At 196…

[-] Daveyborn@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

The US isn't typically gunning down the people renouncing citizenship. Also that 196 was 1000+ yearly pre-pandemic. Nice new account made specifically to reply in this thread btw.

[-] Nobodywantstolearnanything@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Thanks for the admiration of my account, I'm sure it was as honest and real as everything else in this thread. On that note, u gotta non-western propaganda source for that whole "gunning down the people renouncing citizenship" bit, or are u as full of shit as most people here? Tho, to be fair, even if the US wanted to shoot defectors, it cant rly do that when its so preoccupied with sending military aid to actual nazis and other imperialist fucks around the world. And thats when the US isnt shooting brown people and lying about its past actions on the world stage.

Edit: I will admit tho, I did make this account for this thread and only this thread. I did the same for reddit, when a bunch of people were trying to downplay how terrible american slavery was, made quite a few people very unhappy. I'll likely fuck off back to the abyss after i lose interest here like the creepy little shit-stirring goblin I am, but hopefully I'll still be here to respond to whatever comment u leave for me. If i get signed out tho, thats me done. I didnt bother saving the password.

Tankies: “wow, the CIA must be working around the clock!”

[-] naturalgasbad@lemmy.ca 7 points 10 months ago

Compared to 2022? What about 2019?

[-] WelcomeBear@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago

“Just 63 people made it to the South in 2021, more than 90% down from 2019, when 1,047 arrived. The number stayed low in 2022, at just 67.”

[-] Deceptichum@kbin.social 5 points 10 months ago

Huh guess they really cracked down during Covid.

[-] naturalgasbad@lemmy.ca 4 points 10 months ago

So... 2023 is still way below 2019? Makes a good headline, I guess

[-] PrincessLeiasCat@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago

Glad they got out, but I have to think Dear Leader will punish their families for it.

[-] Nobodywantstolearnanything@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

If it worked the way u people think it does, theyd run out of people to kill within a decade or two. Please stop repeating defector nonsense, Yeonmi Park especially is not a source of factual information, even the other defectors think she's full of shit, and that is saying something.

Pls dont bother responding to me. If u want to have an actual debate with facts and historical evidence, just go on hexbear and make a post about it. They'll be more than happy to dig the hole and craft the coffin, all you have to do is lie in it.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The number of North Koreans who defected to South Korea tripled last year, as the easing of border closures imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic encouraged students, women and diplomats to make the perilous journey.

Defector numbers plummeted after North Korea sealed its border with China in early 2020 to prevent the virus from crippling its already inadequate healthcare system, with guards reportedly ordered to shoot suspected escapees on sight.

Very few people attempt to reach the South directly via the heavily armed demilitarised zone or by crossing the de facto maritime border, known as the northern limit line.

Last year, 13 defectors fled to the South by sea, the ministry said, adding that their willingness to risk their personal safety was indicative of “worsening conditions in North Korea”.

“Many must have found it unacceptable after experiencing what it was like to live in the free world, knowing that the economic situation even worsened and internal controls strengthened in North Korea.”

The most high-profile defectors include Thae Yong-ho, who defected in 2016 from the post of deputy ambassador at the North’s embassy in London, declaring himself “sick and tired” of Kim’s regime.

The original article contains 566 words, the summary contains 191 words. Saved 66%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
