So fucking stupid... Giving cops more money isn't reducing crime. Give people a tax rebate and an insurance incentive for having a tracker / immobilizer installed, and all glass etched with tracking numbers.

I'd much rather see people upgrade the security of their cars, and the trackers used to find the lost cars (and criminals).

How about the federal government hold manufacturers (HONDA) responsible for producing a vehicle that can be unlocked and have a new keys programmed to it without having physical access to the original keys.

An unmodified car straight off the lot, particularly one with a totally electronic ignition, should be nearly impossible to steal. Keys could be digitally signed by the manufacture to prevent new keys from being enrolled without the manufacture's digital signature and wouldn't take any extra hardware, it's basically the same idea behind SSL keys for HTTPS websites.

The police won’t do shit without incentive to t up on those trackers though. And money ain’t the right incentive.

I’m glad that work is being done about this, however what I don’t understand is why the money isn’t being spent reinforcing security at the seaports where the vehicles are leaving from.

@veeesix @dar_drama So the cops are like a cable TV package now? “Oh, you’re looking for the deluxe anti-car theft deal…that’ll be $121M extra sir!”

The federal government should be handing out fines to each regional cop shop based on how many cars are stolen in that area.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

The federal government says it is providing $121 million for police in Ontario to target gun and gang violence with a particular focus on the surge in auto thefts and carjackings.

The money for Ontario is coming from a larger federal fund of $390 million set aside by Ottawa in 2023 for the national Initiative to take Action Against Gun and Gang Violence.

Vehicle theft, including violent and armed carjackings, is on the rise in Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area.

Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw told CBC News this week that many auto theft rings, which often send stolen vehicles overseas to sell in places like North Africa and the Middle East, have ties to organized crime.

A record number of stolen vehicles were intercepted by the Canada Border Services Agency last year.

The Ontario government is spending $18 million on prevention efforts, and has also launched a task force aimed at disrupting the "networks responsible for high-risk auto thefts."
