I'm thinking of getting a second phone to ease off iOS. It has been good for productivity stuff but the closed off nature of the device keeps disrupting my plans. Everything is either expensive or ad ridden. (Except floccus, floccus is awesome)

So far I have read about graphene OS and am quite interested. I really despise google though. Any chance to use another device and put some linux flavor on it? I was playing with the idea of a pinephone but it seems to be nowhere near daily drivable, fairphone is starting at 580 €, volla phone (german) 450 €...

Some people said xiaomi should be rootable. But the amount of different phones is huge. The price range is awesome though. I was thinking sub 300 €/$ would be awesome so tinkering doesnt hurt me financially.

Disclaimer: I dont want to go full hermit mode with no sim and a faraday bag. I respect the opinion but thats not what I'm trying to do. I want to write some small apps for my phone and use it as a computer if needed. Calling, matrix and browser should work flawlessly.

Any ideas or suggestions? :)

I went with a Nokia X20. It has standard android, no extra cruft and comes with a guaranteed three years of updates, as opposed to the Google device that was considered obsolete after six months.

It's not waterproof, but that was the only feature I gave up. Cost half of my previous "flagship" phone.

No doubt there is a newer version of this device available today.

You could go for Xperia 10 III and flashing SailfishOS there, it's a fully custom Linux OS, not Yet Another Android Flavor™.

Sounds great! Thanks for the suggestion. Whats your take on the Xperia? Why this one? And barely related sidequestion: does Sailfish Serve ads? Someone said they do but I'm not sure if they were joking.

Xperia 10 III because it's officially supported by the company behind SailfishOS, which means you get access to the Android compatibility layer if you pay for the license. If you intend to use it as a daily driver, sadly you need an Android app or two (for example for banking etc.).

I think 10 IV and 10 V are planned to be officially supported as well, but that will come at a later date.

Note that the Xperia 10 III has a pesky bug where the echo cancellation does not work when you're calling with someone, though that can be mitigated by turning on loudspeaker.

You can of course also go with community supported devices, but I won't be much help there, never had one.

Great explanation imo. Thank you very much. The banking thing is very much an issue because I use nfc a lot but I'll probably just use my card more then. We'll see what else I'm not thinking about.

Yeah, NFC won't work, I switched back to cards as well. Feel free to hit me up on Matrix if you want to chat about the experience.
