Fun! You should put cardboard down under the beds so the grass doesn’t grow through. :)
Is that what the cardboard part of the hugelkultur method is for? Thats what they recommend to fill these with.
These are pressed down to the bottom of the sod level, and I might even be removing the sod in between later, so I wasnt overly concerned about it, but great to know though!
In my experience, the grass will inevitably start growing up from the bottom. This will be our fourth year with 12" raised beds and I'm having to dig up grass roots around some of the edges of three of them.
came here to say cardboard. cardboard is my best friend in the garden
Nice! I just filled a few raised beds yesterday, I've got clay, silt, and shale in my yard. Got 2 yards of top soil, 1 yard of compost delivered for $165. Called three places for soil and it was half the price of any other shops and surprisingly clean. Hope you get good veg in yours.
Nice! I plan on tilling the existing loam/topsoil and adding some shittier stuff I’ve got a pile to get rid off. After that it should still take 6-8” of a 50/50 loam/compost mix. Its $50/yard, stuffs usually more expensive here though in Canada.
Do you have the space to do a raised bed vs in the ground test?
I could, but to what end? The yard is clay with about 6 inches of loam and an inch of top soil for the sod. Did it myself.
