Those people are completely misinformed then. The OS did not come free. You paid for it. You pay for the license every time you buy a computer. If KDE had that then yeah it would by annoying, but they probably wouldn't be asking then.
Most places tell you how much you are paying for it. I have to go out of my way to not pay for it since I don't plan on using windows when I buy a new device.
I think we need uncompromising people in this world. Doesn't mean we have to listen or follow everything they say though. Those are my thoughts on GNU.
As someone who tries to look under the hood for a lot of the open source software I run, one thing that I have noticed is that there are a lot of cases where the general sentiment seems to be port to what. Wayland still doesn't support a number of things that some applications require. A lot of developers that I have interacted with would rather have the app run through XWayland rather than have a wayland version of the app with less features or certain features grayed out.
In the case of one project in paticular, that being the Sunshine game streaming project. I have personally witnessed. Them implementing a solution for wlroots based compositor. Having that solution eventually break as wlroots based projects deprecate the protocol they were using in favor of a new one and now that protocol is looking like it too is old news and is going to be deprecated in favor of a newer and better protocol. What I am getting at here is that protocols not existing isn't the only problem, but things are still very much in development. Even applications that implemented wayland support are being put in positions where they need yet another rewrite because things are far from finalized and still moving pretty fast.

Maybe you should have considered the stuff he wanted to do before convincing him to use linux. I could have told you he'd have problems with that stuff. If he said he mainly plays steam games then sure, but not literally the most finicky, cumbersome games to get going in existence. Also out of curiosity because I haven't even thought about Roblox in like 8 years. I thought that was a browser game?
Me and a buddy just set up syncthing and use that when we need to do this and don't want in third parties involved. Turn it off when you are done.
My problem with this is that the vast majority of times. Works of art are not the works of a singular person. However, because a single bad person was in it or involved in its production. Some people view viewing that work work as supporting that bad person. For example: how many people worked on the movie space jam? I try to avoid things produced by bad people as much as possible, but you also have to look at the scope of the works involved. If the studio itself was involved in such an incident. That would be enough to justify boycotting the entire studio. If it was a singular person, then I expect that person to no longer be allowed in future works, but not a call for the the total avoidance of current and past works.
So as it turns out, if you give people a choice. Some of them will pick something else.

This is true for every OS that you don't use regularly though. I have been learning this the hard way since I haven't ran Windows in years, but have started doing so for work. There are lots of little issues that people just seem to not notice anymore because they are used to it.
As a developer, I have met developers that don't understand file systems. They could write code and not find it. Like wtf?
