Pavel Durov doesn't live in Russia, so I don't see this insinuation has to do with anything.

I really began to understand MLK Jr's line "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" in the past few years. For every injustice allowed (in fact, oftentimes rooted for) we are saying that it will actually be OK to do that elsewhere. Eventually the justification will be OK.

In the USA we said surveillance was OK. Just use it to profile "terrorists" in the so-called war on terror. Use it to profile everyone who appears at the border. Use it to profile every Palestinian in Gaza. Use it to only profile gang members and "criminals." Use it to clandestinely surveil every phone call. Finally, stop pretending: use it to surveil everybody.

How many databases is my face in just because I flew back home from out of the country a few months ago?

This is the direct path from neoliberalism/conservatism to fascism that some of us have been warning about for decades.

Simply put, choosing the "lesser of two evils" over decades means you're sliding towards evil, regardless.

A few remarks:

  • Mullvad is not the only acceptable choice just for torrenting. If your objective is just to subvert copyright trolls, any (non-Israeli) VPN that has a track record of not keeping logs will do the job.
  • FitGirl is great and all but let's not forget DODI. One thing I seriously dislike about FG is while she gets the best compression rates, it's at the cost of like 6x the time to unpack the games. There are probably still more reputable sources for games
  • If you want to use your computer without everything being on the VPN, you will have to either use containers (Linux), virtual machines, or explore split-tunneling features in your VPN client if available.

I wish for once this country could pass an unambiguously good law to protect people's privacy.

Braver than the troops.

Biden hitched the dying empire's wagon to Israel and Ukraine, and now Trump is pretending the rest of the world isn't fed up with US's antics. Sorry, man. Alternatives are rising. Belt and Road exists. Nobody likes us anymore. Many don't even fear us anymore. These genocidal and violent morons are playing the game like it's the 90s without realizing the rules have been updated since then.

After learning about the absurdity of copyright law in the USA I'm not really convinced or compelled to give a cent to these companies. It's not just paying for the content. It's giving these big corporations money so that they can lobby for laws that are against the interests of most people.

Italy seems to be leading the way to an even more bleak future. "Bleak future" seems to really be the order of the day, huh?

Earlier today I went onto youtube in a private window and looked up a video for some old video game. Then I went back to the homepage. I was just smacked with rightwing and sexualized content in the recommendations once the home page was populated. There are a lot of good content makers on YouTube, but it's an absolutely trash website.

I don't know if there have been studies on this, but I would not be surprised if social media platforms (particularly YouTube and Facebook) in the last two months have pivoted hard into promoting more reactionary content, and that they are responsible over the last 15 years for generally promoting conservatism.
