When you get around to a new laptop, look out for one that is Linux compatible. Unfortunately many hardware OEMs don't take the time to provide drivers for Linux, and that causes problems.

Today's internet is very different and has things actually designed for vertical videos so complaining about it makes no sense anymore.

It absolutely makes sense. You can design whatever you want for vertical videos but it makes no difference if the actual content isn't designed for it.

How many times have you seen videos with multiple people falling out of frame while simultaneously half the frame consists of ground and sky? Then the camera operator viciously whips back and forth to try to capture everything, creating a jarring fuckin video? How many times do you see TikTokkers trying to contort their bodies so you can actually see what's going on in the image behind them? What difference does the size of resolution of the image make when half of it is consumed by nothing important?

Well the difference is they didn't use to ask you to accept cookies, they just took them.

So sad. I got into argument just a few days ago and they used ifixit's repairability score as justification for their nonsense.

This seems awful opinionated.

What does "censorship" mean? The entire purpose of a search engine is to "censor" bad results so I would argue that they all have censorship. And if they don't they're probably a bad search engine.

I own a Tesla and it's not even remotely intuitive. Most people who have ridden in my car have a hard time figuring out how to get in/out of it.

~~Just destroyed everything they built in 1 fell swoop. There's absolutely no reason to use Jitsi at this point.~~

Retracting comment. Jitsi is still great, you just need to avoid the official instance.

They hired a third party investigator (whatever that means)

It means exactly what it sounds like...

They were always profit oriented and their goal was always to make money.

Yeah I mean that's the goal of most businesses...

There are lots of ways to make money, and to do so with integrity. Making money isn't an inherently evil thing.

Linus clearly states whenever he can that he’s here for the money and nothing else.

Well that's "clearly" just a blatant lie that never happened.

The fact that they shut down production for a week I think is a pretty good indication that that's not true. Most companies would have just carried on with business as usual and never even publicly acknowledged such criticism.

Linus’s disdain from workers unions

This nonsense needs to die. Linus never expressed disdain for unions. The only thing he said is that if they wanted to unionize there was nothing he could do about it, but that he would consider it a personal failure.

You have a very privileged job if you're just allowed to just tell your employer no when they want more work out of you...

I mean people spent $100/mo. on cable for decades with no option to opt out of ads. And they had to just like jump into the middle of whatever happened to be on at the time.

“We got more photoDNA hits in a two-day period than we’ve probably had in the entire history of our organization of doing any kind of social media analysis, and it’s not even close,

How do you have "probably" and "it's not even close" in the same sentence?

Here's the thing, and what I've been saying for a long time about The Fediverse:

I don't care what platform you have, if it is sufficiently popular, you're GOING to have CSAM. You're going to have alt-right assholes. You're going to have transphobia, you're going to have racism and every other kind of discrimination.

People point fingers at Meta for "allowing" this but there's no amount of money that can reasonably moderate 3 b-b-billion users. Meta, and probably every other platform that's not Twitter or False social, does what they can about this.

Masto and Fedi admins need to be cognizant of the amount of users on their instances and need to have a sufficient number of moderators to manage those users. If they don't have them, they need to close registrations.

But ultimately the Fediverse can also create safe-havens for these sorts of things. Making it easy to set up a discriminatory network that has no outside moderation. This is the downside of free speech.
