Not to be a dick or anything, but I found it funny that you chose to mention him mentioning the political career and his opinion of him. Nice touch, but very much irrelevant. Keep up the good work!

There's a lot to unpack out of this reddit moment.

If we want people to take us seriously about advocating for reform in this housing crisis, this ain't it. Stripping nuance out of the conversation isn't helping the cause, it just makes us look uninformed.

Yes, the vast majority of landlords charge too much and do to little. But claiming that no work is required to be landlord does two things:

  1. It absolves the landlord of the responsibility to maintain the property

  2. It diminishes the scope of the work required to provide people with affordable housing and doesn't set clear goals to accomplish

There is a rule of thumb called the unrecoverable costs to owning which is typically 5% of the property's value. This goes towards plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, HVAC repairs, roof work, pest control, interior upkeep, and much more. The reality is that a property doesn't take care of it self and someone has to.

Yes, the system is broken, rent is unaffordable, and home owner is neigh impossible these days. What we need is regulation on the housing market, getting rid of speculators, reform zoning laws for high density housing, public transit and good urban planning, more subsidized and public housing, etc.

Even when you have all of that you will still need landlords, just not the kind that we have today. Because for housing to exist there is an inherent risk that somebody has to carry to guarantee the mortgage is paid for and that it will not go up in flames.

Reminder that good is not the enemy of perfect. It is much easier to convince 100 people to eat 10% less meat than to convince 10 people to become vegetarian.

I've started eating vegetarian several days a week and all it's done is introduce me to some amazing tasting food that I haven't tried before because of the dumb stigma that vegetarian means not tasty. I find that I enjoy some of these vegetarian dishes more than it's meat counterpart because it's not ruined by tough overcooked tasteless meat.

The joke is that big trucks are just as frivolous as overpriced weddings, and both of these people are idiots.

Fishermen might not have PhDs but they're not idiots. The snow crab population didn't just vanish over night, it's been falling year by year. Not to mention there are size limitations to legally harvesting snow crabs to keep the population sustainable, and being a fisherman necessitates a minimum degree of awareness of crab sustainability whether it's for legal or practical reasons.

Unless you are either female, a minority, young, or have chronic pain in which case any mention of pain you have, no matter how extreme, is considered a drug seeking attempt.

The ER will diagnose people based on their race, sex, gender, and age before they'll diagnose you based on your symptoms. It doesn't matter how much you are suffering, how much pain you are in, or how close you are to killing yourself because you can't take it anymore. ER doctors have no empathy unless you fit a certain demographic.

Before you take everyone's word about the nasal cycle, check if you have dust mite allergies. Turns out I did and my nose was far stuffier and itchier than what should be normal.

I switched out my pillowcase to an allergy pillowcase and started taking some allergy meds. It cleared up my nose a lot and now I can actually feel one nostril only being slightly more closed due to the nasal cycle instead of having it almost all blocked.

One of the many things that bug me about that show is the fact that Sheldon exists as a poor portrayal and misconception of what Autism looks like and how it is used as an excuse for being an asshole at times.

That's not an unpopular opinion, that's just a sheltered opinion. A few things you need to get out of your head:

  1. That so called 'safe countries' are safe for everyone. This doesn't say anything about those countries, it only says how little you know about them.
  2. People seek asylum trivially and are choosy beggars for going to X country (doesn't matter where, this kind of sentiment is always the same)
  3. Europe going to war was 'the good old days'.
  4. That Europe isn't at war right now
  5. The act of being born in a 'safe country' makes you more deserving of it than other human beings
