Question about gre tunnels (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

Hello, I have a rather complicated need to use a gre tunnel and I am having difficulty getting it working. The tunnel is between my home server and Oracle VM. Below is a picture of the topology with config.

Pings between the home server and Oracle VM over the gre tunnel do not seem to be going through as evidenced by tcpdump. I do notice however that the firewall has the correct state table showing that address translation. I am certain that both machines' firewalls are not dropping packets because iptables is not showing anything dropped. I am at a loss here so I welcome any ideas.

Have I been defederated? (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

I just looked on the instance list and my instance is no longer listed. Does this mean I have been blocked? I just upgraded to 0.18.4. Thanks in advance.

Linux distro for gaming (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

I know this has probably been asked before but I am currently using Arch and wondering if my choice is the best for gaming. What are the thoughts from the community? I have an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with 64 gigs of RAM and a decent AMD GPU. Gaming seems to be okay on Arch but I am wondering if I've overlooked something better. Thank you in advance.

ARM64 for the masses (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

Hey! Does anybody have any information about if and when a company might offer ARM64 for general desktop use? I would like to build my own in the same way that I might build a desktop PC out of an Intel or AMD processor.

You're neither champ nor chump. But I would advise you to be a little less rigid because some laws SHOULD be broken. I even had a judge once tell me this. I was arrested for a misdemeanor for providing food and water to the homeless when I was living in Arizona. I was careful not to resist knowing that this fight belonged in the courtroom. At the time I could not afford a private attorney so one was assigned to me who advised me to plead guilty and accept the fine and 30 days in jail. Thankfully, the judge overseeing my arraignment simply dismissed the case out of hand. His words were

Off the record - Young man, some laws are meant to be broken. I applaud your for choosing the right one. On the record - I am dropping the charges and dismissing this case. Furthermore, I am ordering that the arrest record be sealed by the court. This young man presents absolutely no danger to public health, safety or morals. In fact, he did the very charitable thing to help those in need and this is an American value that has no business being criminalized. I do not see making employment difficult for him based on a charitable act.

JFC! HP sucks. Just buy a Brother laser printer used and never worry about it because it's bulletproof and a workhorse.

Bluetooth headset recommendation (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

I'm looking for a recommendation on a full bluetooth headset, not earbuds. I would prefer if it had the boom style protruding microphone and that it would support an easily replaceable battery. I am sick of discarding bluetooth headsets due to battery problems as it's not environmentally friendly. Does one exist in the sub-80 dollar range? Thanks in advance.

There is no defense of the move. It's bad for the internet. Pure and simple!

EDIT: Poor troubleshooting on my part. I missed the part in the dmesg about missing the firmware. I installed the firmware through AUR and everything works as it should. I need to be better than this .....

Okay, so I am ready to tear my hair out over this one. I've followed the Arch wiki to the letter and none of my devices are being discovered. The dmesg command shows my internal bluetooth adapter and blueberry recognizes the adapter. What gives? I don't know where to go to troubleshoot from here. Any ideas are welcome.

Empty communities simply take up resources. I am fine with purging ones that are empty or even not getting any recent postings. Do whatcha gotta do!

Right wing rage bait drives engagement which in turn drives up the cost of advertising and gives them more revenue. This is really why everyone needs to abandon corporate social media in droves.

Lifehacker is just click bait shit now. Once upon a time in a far away land it was good.

I've found that the case for most CEOs in technology which is why I call them techbros. Arguably, they don't even know business all that well either.

Fucking facebook is the worst.

What really is upsetting is that Musk has billions with which he can use on a lark. Most of us would consider 100,000 an impossible risk. Billionaires are the problem. I repeat - The problem.

There's probably not any one single thing that I would do but interestingly enough I was charged once with a misdemeanor for providing food to the homeless and arrested, finger printed, and then released. At the hearing, the arresting officer failed to show and the judge, being a rather empathetic and progressive individual had the following to say to me:

Since the arresting officer has seen fit not to respect this court's time, I am formally dropping the charges. I will go off of the record for one moment: Young man, some laws were intended to be broken. I applaud you for choosing wisely. Back on the record: I will order the record of arrest expunged because I see no benefit to society in having a record of this young man's arrest for performing what is essentially good civil service. And so ordered

I am reminded that there are good people in this world.

Using NGINX as a stream proxy (lemmy.goblackcat.com)

Hello fellow self-hosters. Is it possible to use NGINX as a proxy for an IMAP service where the IMAP server is located on a different host? I have a cloud VPS running NGINX which is connected to my home network via a WireGuard tunnel. What I would like to do is run the IMAP server (Dovecot) in my own network and have NGINX proxy the connection. I have tried doing searches based on this but the examples don't show how to specify the IMAP server for the connection to be redirected to for the lack of a better phrase. I know streaming is possible. Would this be the way to do?

I would love an example to go on. Thanks very much!

[SOLVED] New Lemmy Admin (lemmy.goblackcat.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com to c/technology@beehaw.org

EDIT: With thanks to u/code@lemmy.mayes.io, I have a solution for cleaning up the one table that is growing ridiculously in size and that is the activity table. A TRUNCATE activity; command cleaned that right up. A word of caution is in order because the Lemmy instance must be shutdown completely and only the postgres container running if you're using docker.

As a new Lemmy admin, I think I really need to learn PostgreSQL administration because I need a way to keep my database from ballooning in size and there are no management tools built yet for it. Would someone be so kind as to recommend a good website for learning PostgreSQL? This would also help me maintain my mastodon instance.

If their proposed solution is not completely open sourced and the source visible to everyone, then I have no interest in it.

I cannot possibly see how this could be a good thing.
