A simple answer is because wether you like it or not what happens there influences global politics. Global politics influence the flow of goods and people and how your national politicians position them selves. So it influences, to some degree, what your next phone will cost, fuel prices, your bread prices etc. And emigration and refugee flows to your country and the rise and fall of different political themes in your country.
I found the musical episode to be very much in line with classic trek stand alone episodes. Loved it for that reason. Would I like to see another musical episode? Hell no!
