oh the poor shareholders, i'll lose sleep thinking about their potentially ~~lost~~ diminished dividends!

being a court fool or village idiot have been professions too. The problem nowdays is that too many people look up to the idiots as someone to seriously listen to, not as entertainment.

guess he relates with cancer more than with humans

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Its also something that has to be dealt with or it will destroy humanity eventually, or turn it into something so horrible that destruction might be preferred. Any system we come up with will get corrupted by it if its allowed to exist.

Though its so damn annoyingly hard to eradicate since by doing so you kind of become it yourself, at least if you try to do it the easy way. But to get rid of it in better way relies on people being able / wanting to change or at least not opposing the change in such way it causes more problems.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 8 points 5 days ago (3 children)

The problem is existence itself

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I consider facism to be more like something that corrupts and worms its way into everything. As you said, its older thing than the nazis. Its like somekind of ideological disease.

its just that i cant see how fasicm can be considered communism. Communist regime can also be facist but its crazy to just make them mean the same thing. Its like saying nazi germany was communist.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 18 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (9 children)

if communism = facism then facism = communism. Does that sound even remotely sane? Dumb monument. Though frankly i cant even understand how anyone would get something like that from a wireframe guy telling about huge fish it almost caught.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

the promise i see comes from things that are actually in the game. Though it still needs more to be worthwhile, so i'm not risking my money yet. They just need to add more fun things to do and fix the problems with what they already have and it would already be kind of ok, provided they keep adding stuff.

What point does solar energy have if one has to live without forests for it? I would rather have entire human society collapse than lose the nature to keep supporting the infinite growth of the cancer.

dm restrictions (sopuli.xyz)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by reksas@sopuli.xyz to c/meta@sopuli.xyz

Should there be somekind of restriction to sending dms? While these spambots sending stuff isnt overwhelming at the moment, they still shouldnt be able to do it so easily. In the future its only going to get worse.

Then there is also other instances, accounts from them can also send stuff so it makes this even more complicated.

Sorry that this is so awful to read, i would add more space between paragraphs but it doesnt let me.

  • min account age?

this would force spammers to make tons of accounts into "storage" and slow down their efforts.

  • some custom verification before sending?

not captcha or anything like that, it would have to me custom made so they would need to also build custom workaround. Maybe this wouldn't be so useful since it would be just temporary measure and a lot of work and also annoyance to users.

  • add some trivial task to the dm sending

Some really easy little minigame. If you want to send just one message then it wouldnt be too much of a problem but if you want to send multiple, you have to do it every time. Or make it a timer where you have to do something within x seconds. That should make paraller tasks quite awful. Problem with this might be that if its processed only local, then it could be bypassed unless its something really cleverly made.

  • manual accepting for being able to send direct messages?

This would be a lot of work for admins, though i dont know how big part of userbase even sends direct messages. Messages from other instances would create even more work.

On this email service called disroot you have to write an answer to a question like "tell us about your favourite food" which they seem to manually check when accepting new account.

AI likely makes this really annoying to verify since you have to judge is the text written by human or not. This might be good system with some creativity though, but still not good for processing large amounts of users.

  • manual accepting, but leave it to users themselves?

When you send message to someone, they have to accept receiving messages from that user first, before even seeing the message. This would at least hinder the bots if they can get something out of user just loading the image.

It doesnt even have to be a singular solution. Maybe different things could be combined like if account is younger than x then different things are applied to it. It just cant be too annoying to users no matter what.

Does anyone else have ideas how to deal with this?

Is there? I want to know what kind of stuff they are storing on my computer so I can know if i should do anything about it.

I probably need to start my own business anyway to find any work, so why not try to make some money out of fighting the corporations too.

The idea of my business is to give it-support to regular people, but instead of only helping them with problems with windows and such, I want to instead gently help them start using linux, leave corporate social media in favour of fediverse, use opensource software, block ads. I think there is value to this for those people also because it helps one save money and stay safer in general.

I can also foresee a lot of resistance to this, so many have ideas about how linux for example is awful to use despite never even trying it, same with any other thing that deviates from the usual.

Also, in case the idea manages to succeed, I also want to plan some more fair way to distribute the profits than "owner takes most and workers can be happy if they get the scraps" model we currently have to endure everywhere. The workers should also have a say in how the company is run. But the problem with that is how to prevent bad people from getting in and ruining it for all. Probably more than that too.

This way it should hopefully easier to find help too though not initially, i think, since wages are tied to the amount of money made instead of some hard number that doesnt change even if profits go up.

The general idea of this whole thing is also to not just become another piece of shit exploiting others for own gain, that is how we have got into this mess in the first place.

Also, maybe on other fields there are similar ways to do the same?

Genuinely trying to help people and making some safeguards to prevent the whole thing, if successful, corrupting into yet another profit chasing monstrosity should do at least something. I dont think this fight will see its end at any of our lifetime, but as long as we keep at it, there is some hope.

Hey

What most useful guidebooks or other information focused books do you know?

I need some advice regarding which distro to choose. I tried installing fedora workstation on my laptop as test and it seemed quite annoying to get the user interface right.

I dont mind the technical differences, in fact i'm looking forward to them as linux is more secure and better designed.

The problem i'm having is that i want the good things from windows desktop. for example; tray icons, being able to control filesystem easily with gui, shortcuts on desktop.

Every distro i have tried or seen has been really basic regarding this out of the box with very little customization options. I prefer not having to download million extensions for every little feature that might stop working at every major update or if developer doesnt feel like continuing.

I also would like to be able to easily backup customization settings so i dont have to do everything again if i need to reinstall. I like being able to easily customize everything so having a lot of settings is good thing for me.

I read somewhere about kde plasma and screenshots seemed promising and downloaded kde fedora. Haven't installed it yet but am I on the right track for what i'm looking for? Are there other even better choices? I'd like to nail this from the start so I dont have to reinstall later. I really dont want to wade through every possible distro.

Thank you all, you have been big help

Specificially https://en.z-lib.gs/

I downloaded some pdfs from there and according to virustotal and some pdf online scanner i tried, they have something possibly malicious going on in them. I already deleted them but i opened them in firefox pdf reader. I dont have acrobat installed.

Scanning my system with malwarebytes now, but nothing is finding anything wrong and I havent seen any suspicious activity.

Here is the analysis itself.

I'm starting to panic, please help if you have any advice

Thank you all, you are wonderful people

There used to be some application named vigilante that had alert when microphone or camera was activated. Then it's dev stopped updating it and that was that.

I know android should show some small icon when camera or mic is active, but that doesnt help me if i'm not actively looking at the screen at the time.

Do you know of anything that could still do what vigilante did? I'd prefer to know if something was trying to be sneaky. Or is it pointless even trying to do that due to something?

Link to list of searchengines, provided by irenesteam in the comments

Old post text for history. This post turned out to become quite a mess.

spoiler

Previously I was looking for search engine that turned out it wasnt worth remembering afterall. As people helped, i thought its easier to just list every site its not. The site I was looking for turned out to be maintained by some rightwing assholes, but I thought maybe it could still be useful as it collects scrapers from many engines into one site. But since it apparently blocks lqbt domains, its basically worthless since who knows what else it blocks. Apparently anything those fucks touch is tainted.

I tried describing the site based on what I remembered and how it appeared to me. now it feels shameful even leaving it as context. The picture gets conveyed through the comments anyway for those interested.

I'm sorry it ended up like this, I should probably have done this much eariler and not give the site any benefit of the doubt.

So, instead lets make this into list of search engines so this post might have at least something positive about it. I already started gathering the list earlier as by product of the unfortunate search. It might be better to just scrap this all and start with new post but it would also erase what happened and the lesson learned.

I know there are lists already, but I dont think they all have every engine, especially smaller or newer ones. We could also gather information about engines' maintainers, stuff that helps determine what to expect from them. I'll try gathering it here on this post from the comments and if I find something myself.

Lets avoid all ai searchers since those ought to be in their own category anyway.

List of search engines

  • bing
  • kagi
  • yacy
  • ask.com
  • searx
  • brave
  • ecosia
  • mojeek
  • duckduckgo
  • marginalia
  • startpage
  • giburu
  • yippy
  • qwant

Is there some way to really know when you microphone is being used on android 13? I know there are notifications for it if applications are using it and it might even display some icon, but that doesnt really help if the phone is in my pocket.

In f-droid, there used to be application called vigilante that did this, but it's development was discontinued because apparently its features are part of android itself now, according to its github page.

I also don't know if the system itself can be trusted to always tell me. I started thinking about it more when I noticed that google play wants to update some 'qualcomm voice assist' application that was installed without my permission and isnt even displayed on the list of applications. I also cant modify its permissions so i have to assume it has permission to do anything.

So is there any program or anything that lets you know when mic is recording and maybe even if phone is transmitting that information, even if android itself isnt telling me about it.

I wish i could just install some better operating system, but that isnt an option for me at the moment.

Thanks to reddit becoming such a shitshow, it pushed so many people to lemmy. I know all this has existed for a while now, but with all the users now its really wonderful. Also many people likely wouldn't have known to come here if they weren't leaving reddit first.

Now, I was never that active in reddit and it probably had started to go bad even before I joined first time so I likely dont have enough context to properly compare, but so far lemmy has been so much better than I have seen reddit be even before it really started to go downhill.

I think lemmy will also be better than reddit could ever have been.

I hope this time it wont burn down
